The State of Philippine Blogging: Alive & Kickin’

iBloggers

As a blogger and as a writer who writes about bloggers, I simply had to attend the 2nd Philippine Blogging Summit (iBlog2) in faraway UP Diliman Quezon City today. I didn’t regret it one bit, as I was able to see some of my online friends and discover new ones.Too bad I wasn’t able to linger much as I was too worried about the traffic going home (it was past 5 p.m. already and the affair wasn’t finished yet). Photo shows some of the bloggers I saw: columnist Dean Bocobo, Atty. Marvin Aceron, lawyer Punzi, Mike Villar of The Man Blog and RonAllan.

Deliciously cheap: Moud’s Chicken Halal, Quiapo

Originally uploaded by annalyn.

You are likely to stumble into Moud’s Chicken Halal if you are one of those avidly scouring Quiapo for counterfeit DVDs of Jewel in the Palace and such. Even so, there are no signs announcing that you have arrived in Moud’s except that the line is long and there’s a big rotisserie grill roasting dozens of their golden-brown chicken.

Blast from the 80s past: leggings and Phoebe Cates

phoebe cates

Was just leisurely reading today when I heard the following news:

Leggings are making a comeback ~ especially as stores like Nordstrom are now carrying them in their shelves.

Phoebe Cates is alive and kickin’. She has just opened a high-end boutique in Manhattan called Blue Tree.

Leggings and Phoebe Cates..what could be more 80s than these?

My experience with the Samsung SGH-P300

me with samsung P300

It’s as small as a credit card and looks like a calculator but it’s neither of those. What is it then?

It’s the Samsung SGH-P300.

I certainly had fun having this phone with me for a review recently. Not only did it get raves from everyone who saw it, it also has nifty features like a vivid 262K color screen, 1.3 mp cam, USB connectivity and Bluetooth.

Home for the holidays

I’ll be home sweet home for the long Holy Week vacation and will be travelling again after that. In the meantime, am looking forward to doing some spring cleaning, organizing my dishevelled things, cooking for my kids and resting. Working 48 hours and getting only one day off a week plus additional time to devote to my writing assignments has really taken its toll on me. I need some lovin’.

From Lemery to the beaches of Bauan… and back!

Batangascapes

In all probability, I won’t be going out of Manila during the Holy Week madness. But the whole clan did spend an enjoyable time in Batangas for the past few days to enjoy the beaches before all the crowds pour in.

The seaside towns of Batangas province will always be desirable destinations for burned-out cityslickers like me since it’s just two hours’ drive from Manila. Read more

101 things I love about Manila (a continuing list)

bubbleboy

Originally uploaded by annalyn.

Manila unnerves me with its pack of beggars, criminals and swindlers (especially the one who victimized me last December)but I guess the things I love about this city outnumber the bad. I love Manila because it has s-o-u-l and it will always stand for the dreams and ambitions of its inhabitants who hope to make it to the big league, despite the seeming contradictions. Besides, I live and work in Manila so I have no choice but to love it back. I’ve made this list to convince myself of its virtues. Your contributions would be appreciated too (am not even halfway, not sure if I’ll make it to 101!)

The Runaway Groom (updated)

(Note: This is one of my interesting articles I’ve safekept which was previously published in Weddings Magazine. If you have another engrossing story to tell, care to share them here :)

Like Julia Roberts’ character Maggie Carpenter in Runaway Bride, my friend Ron is a runaway groom – two times over.

Twice, he mustered enough courage to propose to his two serious girlfriends and twice he called the engagement off – naturally with heartbreaking results.

Ron’s first engagement was to his officemate Tina. They were on-and-off for six years. Ron proposed to her during one of their “off” moments.

Travelling light

Am such a disciple for travelling light that there have been times I carried it to the extreme. Once, I ran out of clothes on the third day of a four-day vacation. This is because I loathe the idea of lugging around too heavy luggages , even carry-ons, especially in international airports where you have to walk something like a kilometer to traverse one terminal to the next.

Having said so, here are ‘travel light’ tips I’ve gathered through the years. Would appreciate getting yours too:

Local plane fares getting cheaper

Got in just in time to avail of Cebu Pacific’s Unfare! promo which ended yesterday. I have to admit that I booked on a whim but the One Peso fare to select destinations in the country was just too cheap to resist. Flights to Kalibo, Tagbilaran and Puerto Princesa were already fully booked so I chose Iloilo. I don’t know why I picked Iloilo (har! har!) but the main reason is that I haven’t been there. I do plan to go on a food trip there when I travel early October. Plus, it’s a good jump-off point to Guimaras Island and Boracay is only five hours away by land. Munchin’ in Iloilo then partyin’ in Boracay in a span of three days seems like a very good idea.
