I begin this series on Manila’s Chinatown by giving the spotlight on Panciteria Lido which is considered a culinary landmark in the area, having been established in 1936. Located on T. Alonzo St., Sta. Cruz, Manila, it has the buzz of the traditional Chinese teahouse, complete with Chinese reading Chinese language newspapers. Weekends are usually packed and Lido hosts VIPs like Sen. Alfredo Lim who goes here without fail on Sundays.

Trying out the LRT2
June 30, 2006 by ajay
In these days of high gas prices, using your car the whole time doesn’t seem practical, especially if you’re a Manilan going to the shopping/business districts of Ortigas and Makati. Believe moi, the traffic and finding some parking in these places on normal days is so crazy and will drain a hole in your pocket besides.
Ever since ditching my car, I’ve found out it a breeze to use the train to go from one point of Manila to the next. On those days when I’ve done so (emphasis on ‘those days’ because my workplace is just walking distance from my house) I’ve achieved the remarkable thing of slashing my transpo budget by as much as 200%. Not too bad eh?

2006 World Cup fever heats up even more: meet the hunks of football
June 27, 2006 by ajay
The World Cup fever is on in Manila! Okay, the crowds are mostly male but at least this basketball-crazy country is taking notice of another sport for a change.A lot of bars and lounges, including one in the hotel I work in, have put up giant TVs and projection screens to show the matches now happening in Germany. And the atmosphere is going to heat up even more on the way to the finals. Which team do you think will win?
Some say current champion Brazil – with its power-packed line-up – has a strong chance of winning the World Cup back-to-back. Their midfielder Kaka, wearing jersey no. 8, is really good and … and looking good as well

The son can cook
June 26, 2006 by ajay
I was enjoying my Sunday rest yesterday when I got up to see what the commotion in the other side of the house was all about.
Yay! I was surprised to see my son cooking in front of the stove flipping his very first successful sunny side up. Mom was silently beaming. The son can cook!

Cape Santiago Lighthouse, a Calatagan landmark
June 25, 2006 by ajay
One of the highlights of my visit to Calatagan,Batangas was a hike up the Cape Santiago Lighthouse which is the oldest working lighthouse in the country. Built in 1890 by the Spanish government, a fact sheet describes the lighthouse as standing ” on an elevated cliff which guides the way between Verde Island Passage, San Bernardino Strait and the Manila Bay. It is also one of the signals of streamers passing to and fro, being in telegraphic communication with Manila Bay via Batangas, Calamba in Laguna de Bay, Cavite and Manila.”
Because the weather was very hot, I never thought I could climb the 80 or so steps to reach the top of the lighthouse which could be negotiated via a spiral staircase. Good thing that my son was enthusiastic enough to lead me the way.

Golden Sunset Resort: fun for the whole family
June 24, 2006 by ajay
The Golden Sunset Resort opened only in January of this year but we’ve heard so much buzz about this place already. Maybe it’s because the owner is no less than the mega-hairdresser Ricky Reyes who is known hereabouts as a savvy marketer and public relations person.
When the invitation came, I just couldn’t resist going to this place. Another factor is that I haven’t been to Calatagan, Batangas where the resort is located. Arriving there, I wasn’t disappointed. The resort was huge and the centerpiece was the beautifully-designed water park which reminded me of another favorite, the Fontana resort in Clark, Pampanga.

Migration advice to Michael: ‘The Philippines is in the heart’ (updated)
June 22, 2006 by ajay
Michael Flannagan wrote in response to this post:
Hi Ajay,
Yes, I don’t think people really understand or appreciate Filipinos. I think they are the most wonderful people in the world. I have also been around a bit and I have meet many people from many lands but Filipinios are the most loving and genuine people I’ve ever met. Now on to why I write.
I’m trying to find out info about immigrating to the Philippines. If you know anything of value I would appreciate it if you could share it with me.

Love advice to Jonnie: ‘time to face the music’
June 21, 2006 by ajay
I have gotten all sorts of inquiries on my posts in this blog, the most popular being people who have asked me about this private pool in Laguna and who my favorite psychic is. Yes, some have even hounded me on YM just to know about the rates, time of availability etc. that I feel like a Wikipedia/telephone directory already. Mercy, mercy moi!
The other day, reader Jonnie left a comment here to unload his problem. Being a frustrated advice columnist, I now deal with his dilemma in this post. If you were in the situation, how would you act too? Here goes:

June 19, 2006 by ajay
Not too long ago, a reader asked me why I haven’t featured some bloggers “other people love to hate,” like Bryanboy!
Well thanks Gera. It sure took some time coming but we finally got down to an interview with the irrepressible Bryanboy in this week’s Blog-o-Rama.

Ropes Challenge in La Corona de Pagsanjan Resort
June 16, 2006 by ajay
During my recent trip to Pagsanjan, we stayed at the La Corona Resort and found their Ropes Challenge Course very interesting. It is a series of “high” and “low” outdoor events that are surprisingly in-demand among top Philippine companies as a tool for teaching team-building, leadership, communication, coaching, and risk-taking.
Could you do one of these? Like most people,I have fear of heights and will not bungee jump even if offered a million bucks. The closest I ever got to an adventure was ride this twistin’-and-turnin’ super-rollercoaster at the theme park. It was something that I’ll only do once in my life.
