  1. Hotel room for a little more than $2… only in KL

    July 10, 2007 by ajay

I’ll try staying at Tunehotels.com the next time I am in KL because it’s cheap, and the fact that its sister-company is Air Asia could only mean it’s very very cheap :D

The adverts say one can get a room for as low as 10 ringgit (which translates to roughly P130 pesos or a little more than $2) That’s certainly not bad for 20 hours of stay if you’re backpacking or travelling on a budget.

The hotel concept i something that’s not been explored much actually, and it borrows from Air Asia’s premise of being a “no-frills” facility. Browsing through the FAQ can make it seem funny if you’re the type who’s used to staying in standard hotel rooms:

All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with “power shower” but air conditioning is pay per use. Basic ventilation is ceiling fan.

There’s hot shower in the bathroom but you will have to buy your own towel, soap and shampoo in the hotel convenience store. “Alternatively, you can bring your own.”

  2. Friendster vs. Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn etc.

    July 8, 2007 by ajay

It’s official: Friendster is so 2003. It’s like living in a time warp with all the jologs people in the universe :D

I realized this while having lunch with my brother last Saturday. I asked him to tell my niece (his daughter) why she hasn’t accepted my Friend Request, pending for the longest time. He tells him she’s hanging out in MySpace.

It has been a long time since I’ve taken a serious jab at the dating sites and all these social networking things. I don’t have a dime of a time to spare in the world and am not necessarily looking. The only reason why I registered with Facebook recently was because our GlobeRoamerTV team created an account with it and also on MySpace. Chatting in our group forum composed of five Americans and one Australian, I felt like an alien because they weren’t even mentioning Friendster. I just had to say it’s big in the Philippines.

  3. iPhone arrives in Intramuros

    July 7, 2007 by ajay

The trailblazing Manila Bulletin Technews lab in Intramuros is officially now the first publication in the Philippines to get hold of the much-vaunted Apple iPhone. I am also excited to be one of the first to test-drive this wonder after my editor promised to lend it to me soon after he’s finished reviewing it. Something like next week ora mismo, hehe :P

While I would have liked to review the ballyhooed iPhone, it would have put too much pressure and intimidated the hell out of me. Secondly, am not a Mac user. I am curious to find out though about the phone’s LCD touch screen which is probably similar to the LG Chocolate phone I reviewed before.

What’s good news is the phone’s ultra-user friendly features. As MB’s Technews Editor Art Samaniego writes in his blog:

“What’s good about this phone is the interface that even my 10 year old son and my 68 year old mother could easily operate it. The iPhone has dented button in front that serves as a escape key that brings you back to the main menu, this means that non-techie users would never get lost while using the phone.”

  4. Only in the Philippines: electric jeepneys invade Makati

    July 5, 2007 by ajay

Jeepneys are those colorfully-designed vehicles unique to the Philippines. Manila would not be Manila without this mode of public transport which stop, and pick up, passengers without a warning at every intersection. Their drivers are sometimes obnoxious and oblivious to the law, but even then, jeepneys have become icons in themselves, a sturdy symbol about living in the Philippines.

Just when we thought they were in danger of being phased out, comes now the jeepney’s latest evolution. The newest jeepney does not only blare loud music and is airconditioned, it is also electrically-powered from biodegradable wastes. Our big thanks to Greenpeace Philippines for sending the photo and this info:

” Electric-powered jeepneys are set to revolutionize
the Philippines’ most recognizable icon. Electric Jeepneys (E-Jeepneys),
the first public transport system of its kind in Southeast Asia, were
launched yesterday (July 4) in a historic test drive in Makati City, the country’s
financial capital, by GRIPP (Green Renewable Independent Power
Producer), Greenpeace, and the Makati City Government.

The Electric Jeepneys are part of an innovative project led by GRIPP
which intends to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels to help mitigate
climate change, even as it addresses urban problems such as air
    pollution and solid waste.

  5. Cheesy poem ahead:’i miss you…’

    July 5, 2007 by ajay

    i miss you

because you’re there in the places we used to walk through

in the smooth outline of my coffee cup

where my lips wish it was you i am touching instead

    i miss you

because soon it will be raining

and i’ll be staring at those droplets through my window pane -

your warm embrace shielding me from the cold,

your gentle voice playing through my mind

simply this soul knows it will march in spring

if it finds you and dances beside you

    once again.

    Egad, I miss blogging…..
can’t stop it, can’t resist it
simply have to be back, three days after the fact, hehe :P

  6. A much-needed blog vacation & why am still addicted to blogging after three years

    July 3, 2007 by ajay

After taking this test, am glad I still have my sanity intact. 60% would have made me too lax (relaxed?) and 89% would seem to make it appear that I have no other life and need therapy fast!! :P It helps that am not online for the most part of the day.

Am also surprised to learn that blogging addiction does not only refer to bloggers but avid readers (or followers) of blogs. You can take the quiz too if you’re a fan!

72%How Addicted to Blogging Are You?

    Mingle2Online Dating

Which reminds me…. July is my blogiversary month. I am officially blogging for three years already (my first entry was sometime on the last week of July 2004). I realized that blogging is hard work because my total number of posts stands at a pitiful 472. It is hard being prolific. Post #500 should be a milestone, an occasion which calls for uncorking a wine bottle and it should come a few months from now :P Thanks for sharing it with me after all this time.

Following this project from Daily Blog Tips, here are the Top Three Reasons why am still blogging after Three years:

    1. Blogging is an outlet for my writing. Okay, it may not be “the blog post that will change the world” kind of writing but I can write and I thank Him for giving me the gift to express myself through the written word. We are just lucky that blogging (and all the resultant technologies that go with it) has been invented in this generation. Do you imagine if blogging caught up with Shakespeare, Hemingway and other literary greats, how much more creative and productive they would have been!

  7. In search of the strongest coffee

    July 1, 2007 by ajay

My job is almost cushy save for the fact that it requires me to work on the graveyard shift for a few days every three weeks. I dread it when it comes knowing that my body is conditioned to doze off, 2 a.m. at the latest. Early on, my mom determined I could not be a lawyer no matter how I wanted to take the course post-college. She knew I would simply sleep through all those books and documents.

It is therefore ironic that I’d find myself in a job which miraculously teems with life 24/7. Six o’clock in the morning and there are still lots of people huddled over the gaming tables or the slot machines. I’ve been a player before so I know how it feels. Simply couldn’t explain the adrenaline rush of the tables, knowing that you’re betting all that money as if your life depended on it.
