  1. A publicist’s guide to dealing with bloggers

    August 8, 2007 by ajay

This is what we’ve seen this year:

With more and more people relying on the web world wide web for information, publicists will have no choice but to network with bloggers to help them spread the news. Worthy mentions in blog posts now comprise the “media mileage” PRs hope to get in behalf of their clients, and for good measure.

Here’s the first part of my self-proclaimed guide on dealing with b-l-o-g-g-e-r-s (because am a former publicist-turned-blogger): :P

    1. Familiarize yourself with the workings of the blogosphere. Know who is who, what is what; read up on blogging-related stuff ; be a “geek” or at least act like one.

    2. Work your way around the communities. Blogging is not just about a disparate bunch of people facing their computer, they do “eyeballs and meet-ups every now and then, as well as connect through various online fora and group blogs. Make sure you know where to find them; know the buzz around the blogosphere at all times.

    3. Rely on good ol’ referrals from blogger-friends, but by all means also diversify your reach. Look through group blogs on niche topics, blogrolls and sites like Technorati.

    4. Get familiar with the blogging culture, or the blogging social culture, if there ever ever was one. A few things to expect: bloggers like carrying around their laptops, dressing in comfy jeans and tees, and who can refuse an ice-cold bottle of San Miguel beer? Be stumped with what some of these people know about computers and the like.

    5. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ applies. Remember my name, please please do not email me using another blogger’s name.:D Bloggers will have a bloated self-importance of themselves and their blog; make sure you read up and covered sufficient ground before contacting.

  2. The past week: plugs and pictures

    August 7, 2007 by ajay

Too tired & knackered to blog. While I try to get back to regular programming, kindly allow me to post the following plugs and pictures:

Melo Villareal’s Lakbay Pilipinas blog is giving some readers a chance to win a limited edition free copy of Jessica Zafra’s Twisted Travels. The rules are simple: Just comment on the post, blog about it, Stumble it!, and/or contribute at least two articles to the blog. Why am I doing this? Because I want my copy too! :P Thanks in advance Melo:)

Zee has clued me in on this interesting contest by Nestle Philippines on how Nescafe 3-in-1 enhances your barkada moments. Show your creativity by piecing together any of the videos in the site into a 90-second commercial. For the advanced category, you may use your own vids and animation. Cool prices such as Macbooks and iPods are at stake!

August has been a milestone month for breastfeeding advocates, with a synchronized breastfeeding to be held worldwide tomorrow, August 8. In the local front, underwear maker Barbizon held a two-kilometer Milkshake Marathon at the Fort. TV host Suzi Entrata-Abrera noted that breastfeeding is a lifestyle choice and people should know more than attributing it to “old-fashioned, stay-at-home moms who have nothing better to do.” Said Suzi:
” Breastfeeding is a significant health decision with life-long consequences for babies, parents as well as the environment.” Well, if women can only be assured that they’d be as thin as Suzi even after they’ve delivered three (or four?) babies, am sure they’d be breastfeeding more. I was only able to breastfeed my eldest for a brief time and I had to express milk for my twins who were in the incubator for the first few weeks of their life. I surely give my hats off to Noemi who had the motivation to do it and has a beautiful experience to tell.

  3. Presscon, class reunion, despedida etc.

    August 1, 2007 by ajay

My social calendar has been full.

First on the agenda was the class reunion of our UST AB Journalism Batch XX in Benjo’s Makati Condo. We had fun recalling old times, loading on red wine, singing to death and yours truly was endlessly being teased “Juju, may boobs ka na?!” (gosh, may kambal pa nga eh). Carol even brought her old albums reminiscent of padded shoulders, Kung Fu shoes and Aqua Net hairspray. .A big shout-out to our batchmates living abroad: please make your presence felt and join our YahooGroups today.

Photo shows moi with Brad Geiser (a.k.a. The Amor Maclang’s better-half) with Timbuk2 Bags’ dapper brand manager Jose Tañada at the launch of Timbuk2′s “Blogger Bag” in TGI Friday’s Glorietta. Brad is shown carrying the messenger-style bag which is a “Crumpler killer,” so I was told. It is water-proof, abrasion-resistant and is made of military standard ballistic nylon. With how it’s made, you can bring this bag to Lebanon or Iraq, if you want to :P The bag also has “built-in, corduroy lined laptop sleeve ” which protects one’s prized laptop from shock. There are also nifty things like a key tether, a holder for your iPods or MP3 player and other compartments essential for blogging-on-the-go. The question is: would I buy this bag? Should I, could I? The answer is yes… if only I had the mind to invest first in a laptop.

More about the bag launch and blogging PR policy in my Blog-O-Rama column this week.

“You promised me you’ll hand me over your Little Black Book of boyz and toyz, now all I get is that cozy lunch despedida of torta, leche flan and paella?!” ..and so I will surely miss The James Ong who’s moving on from his job as gofer/editor of Metro Magazine for an online venture in the great-island state of Singapore. Quotable James who I remember from the following conversation:

I realized that what I really need is a companion, and not a lover!”
“Well maybe then you should become a lesbian?
    !”

    Guess who said what?
