  1. Thank You 2007 & A Happy New Year!

    December 31, 2007 by ajay

Our beloved Blogkadahan says goodbye to 2007 with a few profound thoughts from its members. The posts encapsulate a year of wishes, fulfilled desires and milestones. I give my own take on the passing year with precious thank you’s to special people in my life. Did I say that includes me? You, You and You, of course!

I work in the service industry where Thank You is an overused word. Perhaps it takes pondering on what “Thank You” really means that we get to see the beauty and poetry behind it.

Thank You Lord because each time the sun rises, I know that there’s another day to be enjoyed and relished. I cannot thank you enough for the laughter of my kids and the gift of this full-throttle life which makes me look at the wealth of those experiences with open eyes and joy!

My children will always be my inspiration and my pride, my anchor through the flotsam and jetsam, the clear skies and stormy seas. Life would be easier without them, but then what kind of life would that be? Single parenthood has given me purpose and immeasurable courage, a chance to transcend my character flaws and weaknesses and strive to always be the greater person than I am. Thank You Paolo, Dionne and Dianne for letting me learn with each new day the letters l, o, v & e in the alphabet and demonstrating it in the many ways we can, with shrieks and laughter in our home and beyond.

I thank My Person for appreciating myself and plainly just forgiving myself when I succumb to stress and pressure. I am not superwoman and there is just so much I can do after all. I have never felt better with my life, growing old, and being able to view the world at a different perspective, sans the pettiness of those younger years. I have learned to choose my battles, and not fight everything that comes my way.

How do you define ‘compromise?” I’ve done so in different ways without losing sight of my self or the things I stand for. I have learned to constantly learn because this gives my life reason and meaning. When I cease learning and knowing, I cease to be.

  2. Merry Christmas everyone , from this place to yours

    December 25, 2007 by ajay

A big thank you to all the thoughtful friends, family and countrymen who sent me their holiday greetings. I realized that more than anything, the gift of TIME was what I needed this Christmas. Bear with me if I share my Yuletide wishes here to all who are close to me in mind and heart, by way of reading this blog or communing with me in real life. May the coming year bring a lot of happiness and blessings to you all, and more inspiration for me :P

Christmas this year was quite “enlightening” for me, in the sense that the 24th began with a road accident. How anti-climactic to be leisurely driving to your vacation destination and then hearing the loud thud and “ka-voom” of metal upon metal. Car bumper and fender was wrecked; me and the children were just thankful to come out of it unhurt.

  3. Uncle Google is l-o-v-e, and other highlights of my 2007 blogging

    December 25, 2007 by ajay

    (Adapted from Blog-O-Rama)

In 2007, I wrote 154 blog posts and counting. This is a milestone for me, considering the time, wit and energy it entails to blog a wee bit sensibly. On the average, I made 17 posts per month and I consider blogging at a steady rate as my biggest achievement this year.

During my early years, I admit to blogging for art’s sake. Now I realize I can be more prolific when I don’t take my creativity too seriously and just let the gods of SEO take over. This has given me more returns in terms of traffic and advertising and I believe we are now saving for the Hong Kong Disneyland family vacation that blogging bought :P

Lest I be misunderstood, I am still into blogging for the sheer love of it…. because I will always be at home with the written word and because blogging has enabled me to gain more friends, know more people, interact with readers and network. They are definitely add-ons I can’t complain about.

  5. …. & the rest of the bloggers speak about their blogging achievements

    December 22, 2007 by ajay

For the second week now, yours truly’s column in the Manila Bulletin asks Filipino bloggers their thoughts on what they consider to be their best blogging achievement(s) for 2007. It’s a feat that is certainly not measured by popularity or blog income alone but also personal fulfillment. By fulfillment, we mean intangibles like friendships made, perspectives opened, horizons widened and how blogging has polished one’s use of the English language, perhaps. I can think of a few more – blogging, because it’s time -consuming, can compel you to use your time wisely. Also, it’s undoubtedly a spark in fostering creativity. If you think of a few more ways by which blogging has inspired your world, then you’re an avid disciple. Welcome to the club! Feel free to share your voice & send me your inputs so we can publish and make this a long-running homage to your “best of blogging” thoughts and experiences.

It has been a colorful, exciting year for local blogging. I warmly thank all those who gamely participated in Blog-O-Rama and the countless more who will support our endeavors in the coming year. We wish our readers the spirit of a meaningful, merry Christmas! :P

    Gail Villanueva :

Co-founding the Philippine Blog Awards, helping organize the first ever Blog Parteeh which helped show companies that blogging is a good media for marketing… I consider it a great achievement to be able to do something for the Filipino blogging community :)

    Aaron Roselo :

For me, the greatest blogging achievement for my blog is to reach out to people the wonderful world of graphic design. The fact that complete strangers come up to you and praise you for what you post/write/design is an achievement in its own right.

Noemi Dado, winner – Best Blog in the Philippine Web Awards:

My biggest blogging achievement is reaching out to people who might
need help and comfort. Not only do bereaved family members contact
me but anyone feeling grief or some sort of pain in their life. For
example, there is the heartbroken girl, or the betrayed spouse. I
feel flattered that my readers entrust their problems to me but
unfortunately, I am not a therapist. All I can give is friendly advice
and I refer them to the appropriate person or agency.

    Spanky Enriquez :

Errrrr…hooking up with my female readers? Hahaha.

    Batjay (Nicanor David) :

I was able to connect with a lot of OFWs and my blog was turned into a book.

    Ate Sienna :

to have created a Filipino blogging community with pansitan.net it is taxing a lot of times to maintain the site but when I read their entries about how much they love staying at pansitan or when I find out how many people want to join the community, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. I also feel so honored that they entrust their websites to me…

    Nostalgia Manila :

I never expected Nostalgia Manila to become such a mainstream success. In just little over a year, the blog has been featured in popular magazines, newspapers, tv shows, and will soon be the main feature in an episode that will be produced and aired by a local cable show in Laguna.

Filipinos today are too concerned about moving forward and adapting to the latest technology and trends, paying no attention to archiving a colorful past. Because of Nostalgia Manila, I’ve been able to promote awareness and the importance of historical preservation. Nostalgia Manila has become an online treasure chest of fond memories enjoyed by every generation. Now that’s priceless!

    Marketmanila :

For 2007, at marketmanila.com, it was definitely the satisfaction of raising over PHP200,000 in donations from readers, mostly ones I have NEVER met, to fund over 11,000 meals for malnourished public school children in Manila and Cebu. For a food blog, I think that is a nice way to say thanks all around…

Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet:

Touching people’s lives through Our Awesome Planet by helping them create awesome experiences for their loved ones. Inspiring people to see the awesome places in Manila…

  6. Rudy Project: ‘technically cool eyewear’

    December 18, 2007 by ajay

Pardon the slew of commercial posts ahead. After all it’s Christmas and we’re supposed to be shopping :P Starting with the Sony Ericsson post, I will be featuring here a host of products to have and to hold…. not necessarily wallet-friendly, but then again, who can argue with quality??

Why do I get the feeling that Pinoys wear shades as a matter of form, rather than function? I can see this from the deluge of hip-lookin’ eyewear in the market that’s Made in China, priced at something like $2 each. Sometimes I am tempted to scoop a dozen or two, just to satisfy my fashionista cravings..except that the real purpose of having eyewear is lost somewhere. Heck, the cheap accessories might even let us go blind!! Donning professionally-tested shades in this tropical country is a must to protect ourselves from the sun’s harmful UV rays and not just look as luscious as Eva Longoria in her red tracksuit. We use eye protection to guard ourselves against melanoma, cataracts and premature aging of the skin.

Point well-taken. See your optometrist for details.Although my eyewear radar revolved around Gucci, Ferragamo and the classic RayBan, I honestly wasn’t prepared for the capacity of real heavy-duty designer shades until I got acquainted with Rudy Project recently.

Rudy Project products have been Made in Italy since 1985 and is worn by select military forces around the world, aside from being the official eyewear of the Tour de France and other prestigious competitions. The proof of the pudding is in the breaking, and Rudy Shades are invincible – as blogger Rico Mossesgeld shows, trying to crush the Rudy lenses with his hands:

  7. Why teh Sony Ericsson is this blogger’s phone of choice for Christmas

    December 15, 2007 by ajay

Among my friends, Christmas is usually the best time to upgrade or change cellphones. It’s either because of The Bonus or the Good Samaritans among our loved ones. Luckily, am not pining for a new one. My present mobile baby, the Sony Ericsson K800i, was something I bought a little more than three months go and have been happy with it since. Before this, I owned the Samsung D900 whose form factor I absolutely loved. It was Ultra Slim and it was black which meant it was non-existent to the eyes of pickpockets when placed in my bag.

The world would be a better, less complicated place if we appreciated our cellphones by its ability to call and text. Being a blogger, however, I judge my cellphone by its capacity to take excellent pictures. It means that I wouldn’t have to bring a separate digicam with moi. The better if it’s able to let you blog on the spot!! I have to say the SE K800i does all those.

My old Samsung was handy but there must have been something wrong with the camera even though it was 3 megapixels. The SE K800i is a Sony Cybershot phone which means it’s as good as having a portable cam, with different shoot modes, effects and scenes to choose from. Flash white balance and self-timer are also built-in, not to mention the fact that it has 3G.

    SE phone and watch

Good things can only get better and the K800i has morphed into the much-improved Sony Ericsson K850i which is all of 5 megapixels. Photo above shows my editor with his Sony Ericsson (Fossil) Bluetooth watch fully synchronized with the SE K850i. This means that the K850i’s phone, music and camera functions can actually be controlled from the watch. The watch’s Caller ID feature even shows who’s calling you and what. Cool, isn’t it?

  8. Christmas in the Philippines: longest celebration in the world??

    December 12, 2007 by ajay

Sourced from the Intercontinental Manila holiday brochure (author unknown):

As early as November, Christmas carols fill the air and multi-colored parols (star-shaped lanterns made out of paper and bamboo or capiz shells), garlands of twinkling lights, Christmas trees, belens (Nativity tableau) and other holiday ornaments liven up homes, shopping malls, buildings, and streets in the Philippines where the longest Christmas celebration in the world is observed.

Christmas Day in the Philippines is ushered in by a nine-day novena of dawn Masses starting December 16. Known as the Misa de Gallo (Rooster’s Mass) in Spanish or Simbang Gabi (Night Mass) in Filipino, it is considered as the most important Filipino Christmas tradition. The practice dates back to the Spanish colonial period when priests held Masses at daybreak for farmers who wanted to attend Christmas Mass but could not leave their fields. Today, Filipinos attend the Misa de Gallo as an expression of their devotion to God and as a novena to obtain special graces.

A custom related to the Misa De Gallo is the selling of traditional food by vendors outside churches to the faithful who would either eat these on the spot or for breakfast at home. These delicacies are bibingka (rice flour and egg-based cake cooked using coals on top and under) and puto bumbong ( a purple sticky rice delicacy steamed in bamboo tubes then topped with muscovado sugar and coconut shavings). Salabat (hot ginger tea) and tsokolate (thick Spanish cocoa) are the favorite accompaniments.

  9. Butterfly-catching at Ala Eh! Cafe Amadeo

    December 6, 2007 by ajay

The second floor of the Ark Avilon Zoo has a magnificent view deck where you can see the waterfalls and the Ortigas skyline. It also has an Ala Eh! Cafe Amadeo coffeeshop where you can savor scrumptious snacks and pastries as well as an interesting selection of Philippine coffee (more on that later).

The glass-enclosed Cafe Amadeo didn’t turn out to be your ordinary coffeeshop. When we entered, my kids’ curiosity was fixed somewhere. They were not interested in looking at the phone camera but in something……

they were glued to the sight of butterflies flitting through the vines and flowers!

  10. There’s a zoo in the city! Ark Avilon Zoo opens@ Frontera Verde

    December 5, 2007 by ajay

We’ve never been to the Avilon Zoo in the mountainous area of Montalban. At 7.5 hectares, this zoo touts itself as the largest zoological park in the Philippines. I was glad to find that they’ve opened a branch closer to home, at Frontera Verde where Fun Ranch and Tiendesitas are. The place is called Ark Avilon Zoo because the structure is shaped like the boat. The interiors (such as the huge boulder rocks with the waterfalls) replicate nature and Ark Avilon Zoo houses a number of exotic animals which are sure to fascinate kids and adults alike. I can just imagine many field trips here. The great Avilon Zoo is now more accessible to those living in the city while giving kids a well-rounded experience learning about animals up close and the environment they live in.
