  1. What’s new at Fun Ranch, Frontera Verde

    December 5, 2007 by ajay

The Fun Ranch in Pasig is probably the closest Manilans can get to year-round kiddie entertainment in one roof without going as far as Enchanted Kingdom or out of the country where those Disneyland Resorts are. The place is quite cramped but any parent would appreciate the little touches here and there which are meant to catch a child’s fancy.I just wish they had a ride-all-you-can ticket isntead of paying per ride which can get quite expensive. It seems to be a popular venue for birthday parties or just plain treating the kids out. Going there over the weekend, I was surprised at a few changes that have taken place since we first visited a year ago.

Jumpin’ Jacks is a sprawling outdoor playground that features a series of inflatables. Among these are an obstacle course, the Octopus and tunnels with various themes such as the jungle and winter wonderland. Kids can play hide and seek and jump to their heart’s delight in this paradise.

The Pink Salon by Barbie at the Toy Barn is their first kiddie beauty parlor in the world. You’d feel warmed by the colors even if you’re a grown-up and love pink! So did my little ladies who faced cute the heart-shaped mirrors as if they were ready for primping. In this salon, kids can avail beauty services such as a Diva Hairstyle, Glitter Tattoo and Nail Art. Simply perfect for all the kikay wanna-bes :P

  2. A taste of Oz at Prince Albert Rotisserie, Intercontinental Manila

    December 4, 2007 by ajay

Intercon’s Prince Albert Rotisserie is one of the good ol’ places to get the five-star steak experience in Manila. This is notwithstanding the fact that top hotels seem to be the favorite gathering ground of anyone who has a serious ax to grind against the government these days… just think about the Oakwood caper and more recently, the Manila Pen siege. What are the chances that an armored personal carrier is going to ram through the door as you cut on that wonderful piece of prime rib? Probably nil. It’s just that people like Trillanes want to have their steak and eat it too.

The renovated Prince Albert is more airy and brighter to the eyes. It has a couple of private salons for exclusive meetings, and an open kitchen in the main dining area. Open kitchens have become a standard in most hotels nowadays… have foodies become voyeurs or are chefs just being defensive about being accused of picking their nose away from the prying eyes of diners? But I prefer the dark interiors of the old Prince Albert, thank you.. though the food is still great and the prices remain ideal for those with expense accounts :D

We began our meal with this appetizer of asparagus salad on a bed of Australian blue crab. Perfect. The crab meat was plump and the hint of cheese dressing made it even more irresistible. Modern Australian cuisine is best described as a fusion of different culinary influences, due to the wave of migration in Australia. But the common denominator is that the ingredients must be fresh, to take advantage of the continent’s abundant produce from land and sea.

  3. A shout-out for The Tides Boracay Hotel

    December 2, 2007 by ajay

The preview for “Batanes” was held in The Tides, Boracay’s newest hotel. It made me think that I am definitely staying there on my next visit! Its main advantage is that it is right smack in D’Mall at Station 2, a center of the Bora night life and just a few walks to the main beach. The second reason is that I so dig its minimalist motif and the black & white lines (okay, predominantly white). The last thing I’d like to see is tropical interiors in Bora (think rattan, bamboo and ugh, driftwood). Am glad that the new accommodations are going the direction of contemporary chic, design wise.

The Tides has 60 stylishly-designed rooms, with only two types to choose from: the Essential Room ($120) and the Exceptional ($160) This is the example of the latter, with its own bathtub:
