The return of Savory, and my favorite Solihiya fried chicken

September 1, 2008 by ajay

Fried chicken is my kids’ favorite comfort food. It is a staple when we dine out. Luckily, one’s never wanting of fried/roast chicken in the metro. Just a roll call of my favorites:

Max’s - a classic! best eaten when hot!
KFC – chicken made tasty by the very monosodium-glutamate-y breading :D
Jollibee – Chicken Joy is almost an icon in these parts
Kenny Rogers – love the choices this chain has, they have salads and sidings which other fastfood don’t have
Aristocrat – their chicken-java sauce pairing is simply yummy. Surprisingly, their tapa is very good too. Just a bit on the pricey side.
Bacolod chicken inasal – seems Manila versions are not as good as the real thing, but is still good at satisfying one’s cravings. Must try JT’s Manukan soon!
Andok’s, Baliwag or Lechon Manok ni Senor Pedro – stalls all over, the latter especially for doing away with the perennial lechon sauce, like lechon Cebu.

And then, there’s Savory Chicken.

I remember eating at their pioneer branch in Escolta back in my teen years and how the experience would shape my standards for chicken in later years. Chicken that’s juicy and tender, it tastes more like it was roasted than dunked in oil. The taste goes a notch higher when paired with their gravy (and Savory is simply generous with its sauce).

From its original location in Escolta, looks like Savory has branched out a good four or five decades later. We were able to dine at their branch in Mall of Asia. Same time-tested menu (with a few additions), same delectable chicken and a better ambiance than the old one in Manila. I like their paper-style placemat too.

More on fried chicken that’s not mainstream. There are certainly lots of exciting new restos to try in Greenbelt 5, but me and the kids ended up in Solihiya because their house specialty is their fried chicken.:P

Couldn’t help but agree. Crispy-skinned chicken that’s just about made flavorful by a secret marinade and a twin dip of brown sauce and star anise powder.

Solihiya is at the third floor of Greenbelt 5

Savory has branches in Escolta, F.B. Harrison cor. Buendia, in Makati; Quezon Avenue, near Banawe; Del Monte Avenue, in Quezon City; Ever Gotesco-Ortigas; and Mall of Asia, among others.

Savory was very much a part of my childhood. We used to frequent the Ali Mall branch. I’ve been meaning to go the Hypermarket branch but my last attempt was foiled. It was full house and my companions didn’t want to wait. MUST try again!

I miss all these, especially Jollibee! Heehee. KFC in UAE is worse. Popeye’s and Taza (a local one) are the best in the city.
