  1. EK Biki Waterworld opens at Enchanted Kingdom

    April 26, 2010 by ajay

This long, hot summer makes us wanna beat the heat, literally! We’re now left with two choices, it seems: stay indoors with the airconditioning in full blast, or dive in where the water can caress our skin. For the latter, we can now choose to go to Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa which has opened the first and only world-class inflatable water park, in cooperation with BikiWorld of South Korea.

The latest attraction is called EK Biki Waterworld which consists of six giant inflatable pools with water slides, games and rides that families can enjoy in a safe and hygienic water environment,” according to EK’s top executive Dr. Cynthia Mamon.

  2. Hello again, Mario’s!

    April 25, 2010 by ajay

There were two reasons that would make preggy ol’ me brave the rush-hour traffic to Quezon City on a Thursday night: our wedding emcee, Spanky, and his invite to try the delectable dishes awaiting us at Mario’s, one of the most enduring restaurants in the Tomas Morato area (operating for 30 or so years now, wouldja believe?)

It was time to meet again owners Mrs. Nenuca Benitez and her son Mr. Fil Benitez who were quite excited to introduce their new house specials. One thing about Mario’s (in the few times I’ve dined there), their food doesn’t disappoint and their P600 peso weekend buffet, with the paella, cochinillo (roast suckling pig) and other specialties, is a treat one can’t possibly resist. Swear I’d dine here often if I didn’t live far in the South of Manila :D

There are only five new additions to their extensive menu, and we’re thrilled to try three of them. Pictured above is the santol chutney glazed porkchops served with cajun rice and roasted vegetables (P340). The use of a native fruit in an entree is always interesting, and this one balanced tartness and swetness. Best to try and see for yourself… a welcome addition to all lovers of pork (and pork fat!)

  3. A P600 four-course meal at Harry’s Bar, Venice Piazza, McKinley Hill

    April 24, 2010 by ajay

We’ve eaten a few times at the fairly new Venice Piazza in McKinley Hill, the latest restaurant strip to open near the Fort. I hear the whole complex has a Venetian theme and there will even be those faux gondolas in the future. It all sounds exciting, but the restaurants we’ve tried on this strip has so far been wanting. Old Vine Grille was a costly disappointment and Stackers burgers weren’t really as juicy and tasty as one expects to be. I am forever waiting for Ristras Mexican Grill to open, mostly because San Juan is a long drive from where we live. But the Ristras branch in Venice Piazza is taking so long to be unveiled.

It was good that hubby’s gut feel led us to the doorsteps of Harry’s Bar & Italian Restaurant, a small trattoria by any standard but very much welcoming with its white chairs and multi-colored plate setting. Silly me even had to ask the server if the resto had any sister-companies and his mention of Trattoria Gourmet (in Shang-ri La Mall) and L’Opera (in The Fort) certainly made us decide to finally sit down for dinner. :D

The menu wasn’t a long one, and if one prefers to take the hassle out of ordering, one can just opt for their current promotion – four courses for P600, plus free brewed coffee or tea.I think this price is reasonable enough, considering how expensive it is to dine in a “good” Italian restaurant.

So yes, this is what hubby had for his four courses:

Verdure alla Grilla or Grilled Vegetables in balsamic dressing for the antipasto. The zucchini and eggplants that went with this salad were roasted just right.

  4. The new Barbara: revealed! (updated)

    April 19, 2010 by ajay

She looks good enough to be a movie star!

So this is how Barbara Cruz, Manila’s latest “mystery girl,” looks when totally transformed and made over. During a “reveal party” held at the Baypark, Manila, Barbara was finally identified as a 21-year-old I.T. consultant in a BPO company. She first caught the attention of many people due to her thick brows and old-fashioned (Maria Clara) way of dressing.

  5. Noynoy Aquino on the cover of the April 26 issue of TIME Magazine

    April 17, 2010 by ajay

    Noynoy Aquino in Time magazine

Noynoy Aquino’s campaign seems to have scored another PR coup with Noynoy being put on the cover of TIME Magazine’s April 26, 2010 issue headlined “The New Aquino.”

The feature is significant for several reasons: 1) it plays up his image before the international community; 2) it is a recognition from the international media, especially a renowned magazine like TIME which is a lot less likely to be biased and partial than the local media; 3) it follows past TIME covers/articles about the Aquino family figurehead, the late President Cory Aquino and 4) the article succeeds in letting us believe that Aquino III is the undisputed frontrunner in the May 10 2010 elections, barring grim scenarios like blackouts and computer breakdowns :D

  6. Pinoy Blogfest 1.0 at Richmonde Hotel

    April 16, 2010 by ajay

    Pinoy Blogfest

My friends from Gadgets Magazine are organizing Pinoy Blogfest 1.0 which is happening tomorrow, April 17 at the Richmonde Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City. With the theme ” Opportunity & Responsibility,” it aims to gather together alternative media practitioners and bloggers on issues confronting new media.

A Universal McCann study conducted in 29 countries in 2008, estimates that about 90% of Filipino users read blogs (second only to Korea’s 92%). It also reported that the Philippines has the highest percentage of photo uploaders and web video viewers.

Among the hot topics to be tackled in the confab are ethics, copyright concerns, and journalistic integrity. The keynote speech will focus on “The social and ethical responsibilities of new media.” Other plenary topics include “Optimizing the economic potential of your blog” and “Bloggers as media practitioners.” The morning session is expected to close with a facilitated discussion on “Crafting a blogger’s code of ethics.” Speakers include Gadgets Magazine’s Publisher & CEO Maribelle Alba, media personality Ira Panganiban, Yugatech’s Abe Olandres and Yvonne Chua from Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ).

  7. Shalani Soledad: getting to know Noynoy Aquino’s girlfriend

    April 14, 2010 by ajay

    Shalani Soledad

The Youth & Campus page, one of the Manila Bulletin’s best sections edited by my kumare (and former boss, Ivy Lisa Mendoza) ran a very engaging article over the weekend about Shalani Soledad, the Valenzuela City Councilor who is also known as presidentiable Noynoy Aquino’s girlfriend.

It’s a good read since the pretty (but shy) Shalani is usually not written about in the mainstream lifestyle & society sections. Second, it gives a first-hand insight into a man who’s leading the surveys for the May 2010 elections.

Some of the women which have been linked in the past to Aquino include the sexy actresses Barbara Milano and Diana Zubiri. Then came the newscasters Korina Sanchez (now Mrs. Mar Roxas) and Bernadette Sembrano.

  8. Enchanted Kingdom & places to see in Sta. Rosa, Laguna

    April 9, 2010 by ajay

Since it’s summer, a visit to the Enchanted Kingdom theme park in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna is a treat my kids can’t refuse. Thankfully, there was an invitation from the park management for the family to enjoy their rides. Specifically, it was the Easter Day launch of their new attractions like Zoori’s Adventure, Tweeter and Bungee Fun.

Luckily, South Luzon Expressway had very light traffic that day and our drive from Paranaque was only 45 minutes or so. Enchanted Kingdom was also not crowded and the only thing bearing down on us was the summer heat. It was also hubby’s first time to see the park which is the Philippines’ own version of Hong Kong Disneyland. He only had positive things to say ;)

  9. Supporters of dethroned Bb. Pilipinas Venus Raj take fight to cyberspace

    April 7, 2010 by ajay

Dethroned Bb. Pilipinas Universe Venus Raj before she was stripped of her crown

We watched Venus Raj’s interview in showbiz news show The Buzz last Sunday where she vowed to bring Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. to court for her dethronement, based on grounds of nationality. After that, we just know that the country’s participation in the Miss Universe contest is going to be mired in controversy, more than ever.

And this being election season, vice-presidential candidate Loren Legarda is already riding in the bandwagon to give justice to Venus, a Bicolana. Incidentally, her rival for the land’s second highest elective post, Mar Roxas, happens to be the nephew of Stella Marquez Araneta who heads BPCI and is now under fire from Venus Raj supporters for the dethronement decision which they call ‘unfair and unjust.’

    Happy Easter

Blogging was one thing I gave up during the Holy Week. And now that Christ has risen ( a tradition we celebrate in the Christian world), I would just like to greet blog friends and readers a Happy Easter! :)
