It has been four years since I last visited Zapata’s, the great Mexican resto just outside the perimeter gate of the Clark Special Economic Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga. Going to Clark usually means “food trip!” and during this weekend holiday, I showed the family usual haunts like the VFW Post 2845 and Holiday Inn (their Mequeni Cafe had a great breakfast buffet, btw). I especially warned the hubby to save some room for Zapata’s, especially as he loves his Mexican food.
The interiors are very colorful and remains one of my favorites. There is always something here which catches the eye, especially if you’re a first timer. Seems the new location on the same road is more spacious than the old one, and that’s good.
We placed our orders, and while waiting for it to arrive, the kids and I had much fun trying their wide-brimmed Mexican hats. Don’t forget a photo opportunity when you’re inside the restaurant.
On the menu:
Nachos at P140 – the usual tortilla chips with sliced jalapenos and olives, rich cheddar sauce on the side. Hubby describes this as the most decent plate of nachos he’s had in the islands. I do prefer it the Filipino way with lots of cheese on top.
The enchilada plate had two cheese enchiladas (P165) smothered with their homemade sauce, then served with Mexi-rice and borracho beans. Another good choice… as Mexican as Mexican can get 😀
My choice were the fish tacos dipped in beer batter, grilled and wrapped in fresh corn tortilla and topped with coleslaw. It’s served with salsa, Mexican rice and beans. My only regret is that this dish turned cold on me as I was taking care of my crying baby. I promise to enjoy this more next time!
For the kids, we ordered their large plate of Irish nachos (P185), not knowing what to expect. It’s described in the menu as ” a great snack idea stolen from Carlos Murphy’s of San Diego – a mound of French fries with cheese sauce & chili con carne.” The potatoes weren’t the French fries I expected, but it was darn good just the same. This one’s a must-try.
What else you can find on the Zapata’s menu: burritos, tacos, fajitas, all-meat chili, some entrees, and their Gringo burger. If you’re hungry, go for their combination plates. And oh, don’t forget the margarita.
