And our potato adventure continues.
One of our stops was Anzani restaurant, perched atop Nivel Hills for dinner. It was a good thing that we dropped by here at night since the place is really elegant and romantic. You can stay indoors….
….. or outdoors!
This VIP room has a separate enclosure for more intimate functions.
The underground wine cellar in this sprawling resto was a nice touch. I simply had to have a photo with Sophia Loren above me 🙂
The man behind the resto is Chef Marco Anzani who has worked with Alain Ducasse and has been hailed by the New York Times as a pioneer of ‘New Mediterranean Cuisine.’ Unfortunately, chef Marco wasn’t around during our visit but no problem since the very able sous chef Randell was there to take his place. We had a five-course dinner and it all began with the complimentary bread served in a pot. It was eyecatching, to say the least.
Three kinds of dips to go with the bread: balsamic vinegar, tomato salsa and olive oil.
For starters, we had a roulade of tomato flat bread stuffed with US skin-on fries, Fontina cheese, spicy salami, roasted garlic and figs. I guess this qualifies as the Italian version of the spring roll, haha. This dish was really spicy, by the way. Good thing I love to wrestle with chilis in my mouth 🙂
I liked the presentation of this vegetable lasagna. Zucchini, beetroot, pumpkin and mushrooms were baked and layered with mozzarella and US hash browns, showcasing once more the versatility of potatoes as a tuber crop.
Another innovative use is found in this homemade tortellini. Potato wedges and pumpkin were mashed to make the filling and then drizzled with truffle cream. Thumbs up!
For the main event, we had the seared US hanging beef tender complemented with sauteed fresh mushrooms and, haricot vert and US shoestring potatoes on balsamic gravy.
Dessert was this chocolate mousse with sugar- and honey-coated US crinkle cut potato chip, then topped with chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
Whew! Another epic adventure discovering the tastes of Cebu. My companions and I had to walk back to the hotel after a full day of eating. Anyway, do check out Anzani when in town for good ambiance and great food. Budget an average of P700-P1200 per person, if you’re on a date.
