Pinoys aren’t really a pie-eating people. I don’t mean pizza but PIE. We love our burgers, pastas, steaks, noodles, adobo…but pies? The nearest thing to what I’m referring to is probably our empanada but it’s different in terms of texture & shape and is more Spanish than anything.
Pies are a another matter in Australia because it’s akin to being a national dish. It’s a good thing that one of the leading pie-makers Down Under has set up shop in Manila, with their maiden branch in MOA or the Mall of Asia. And the name is Pie Face…
As you can see, they don’t have that big a space at their first store in MOA but the setting works well with their concept of being a micro-bakery. It’s really neat when you order the pies for take-out and make someone happy in return. These little ones are priced at only P49.
I have to admit it was love at first taste between this pie and me. The puff pastry crust was like a bite of heaven, the filling so tasty and there are many flavors to choose from.
Pulled pork is my favorite but Philly Cheese Steak, Chunky Steak and Aussie Mince are recommended too. Now if you’re fearless and not counting the calories, try everything, by all means! The big pies are priced from P90 to P130.
For the vegetarians by choice, the veggie curry pie is superb.
Pie Face has an in-house chef who’s trying to come up with local flavors, and their Vigan Longanisa Pie is a revelation. Just a wee bit oily when it was served to me but it mimics the real thing and is packed full of sausage meat.
I don’t have much taste for desserts these days but for the sweet toothed, there’s also a range of tempting sweet pies to choose from. The yummy flavors include raspberry, lemon, ube, mango, cappuccino, green tea etc. – all priced at an affordable P45 each.
The savories and sweets are best paired with the house iced tea, the fresh-squeezed Australian orange juice ( a steal at P60 per bottle) and the award-winning line of Di Bella coffee.
Anyway, I can’t believe how friendly and affordable the prices in Pie Face are.
These muesli, white macadamia and chocolate chip cookies for only P25 each…
My daughters and I shared the salted caramel bar. Just P55.
For heavier snacking, there’s the ham & cheese croissant (P130) and the spanish sardines & feta sandwich (P140)…
Salads, pastas, brownies and a few more goodies are available too. There’s no boring moment.
