There’s a field where the Philippines holds much promise in the global stage. For long, we’ve been known as a country which sent its seamen, engineers, nurses, IT professionals and domestic helpers abroad.
But did you know Pinoys are also getting recognized in the area of game development? Yes, those console games, mobile games and anything app-based that you can think about.
We learned about this when we talked to Ms. Jackeline Chua, managing director and co-founder of Synergy88 Digital, a full-service game development studio which is rated Triple A for its expertise and also happens to be the first Microsoft Certified Vendor for Game Art in the Philippines.
Synergy88’s robust portfolio includes doing work for the Windows/Xbox video shooter game Gears of War 4. Locally, it’s known for games like Barangay Basketball and Vince & Kath, the messenger-style novel available on the App Store.
Ms. Chua and team recently participated in the External Development Summit (XDS) in Vancouver, Canada where they once again spread the gospel of Filipino expertise in game art and animation. XDS is a much-awaited event for knowledge sharing and B2B networking among key people involved in animation, audio, and software engineering around the world.
Through the initiative of the DTI Export Marketing Bureau, companies like Synergy88 are being noticed in international expos like the XDS and are able to get their international clients.
“The games industry is worth about US$100 billion right now and with the world’s population having unprecedented access to the internet, there is a big demand for digital content. This is where our game designers and graphic artists come in. If we employ more of them with competitive salaries, then the best of our young Filipino talents do not need to go out of the country,” Chua narrated.
It was learned that a junior 2D artist has a starting salary of P25,000 to 30,000 while a junior 3D artist is offered a starting salary of as much as P60,000.
Synergy 88 is discovering and retaining a pool of talents who can meet the demand through the Innovation Lab. This is a project it is undertaking with top schools like UST and I-Academy where they collaborate with students in conceptualizing digital products. The students’ thesis are even published and shared globally. Participating students are able to benefit through the continuous education the studio provides such as lectures, workshops and even help in the acquisition of the needed softwares and licenses.
