  1. BB cream: make it Dr. Jart!

    June 3, 2010 by ajay

    DR.JART BB Cream

You read it on the net and all beauty-conscious ladies are talking about it: the latest make-up bag must-have called BB cream (BB is short for blemish base/blemish balm). It’s the latest phenomenon from the country which brought us chap chae, Kim Bum, and Boys Over Flowers. Really now, there’s no stopping the Korean invasion – from the shows we watch, the food we eat, the clothes we dress up in and how to look good.

The BB cream is hot because of its all-in-one benefits. You might not need separate tubes of concealer, sunblock, moisturizer, make-up base and anti-wrinkle agent again. One month of continuous use and the skin is supposed to be softer, clearer and smoother.

I love the fact that BB creams are now available in the Philippine market and we don’t have to badger our friends or relatives in Korea to bring home one. Of the various labels, am most excited to try the leading Korean brand Dr. Jart+ which had its launch in Ayala Museum recently. Now that BB is all the rage, beware of wasting money on imitations. Dr. Jart+ is initially available at Mercury Drug.

She looks good enough to be a movie star!

So this is how Barbara Cruz, Manila’s latest “mystery girl,” looks when totally transformed and made over. During a “reveal party” held at the Baypark, Manila, Barbara was finally identified as a 21-year-old I.T. consultant in a BPO company. She first caught the attention of many people due to her thick brows and old-fashioned (Maria Clara) way of dressing.

  3. Supporters of dethroned Bb. Pilipinas Venus Raj take fight to cyberspace

    April 7, 2010 by ajay

Dethroned Bb. Pilipinas Universe Venus Raj before she was stripped of her crown

We watched Venus Raj’s interview in showbiz news show The Buzz last Sunday where she vowed to bring Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. to court for her dethronement, based on grounds of nationality. After that, we just know that the country’s participation in the Miss Universe contest is going to be mired in controversy, more than ever.

And this being election season, vice-presidential candidate Loren Legarda is already riding in the bandwagon to give justice to Venus, a Bicolana. Incidentally, her rival for the land’s second highest elective post, Mar Roxas, happens to be the nephew of Stella Marquez Araneta who heads BPCI and is now under fire from Venus Raj supporters for the dethronement decision which they call ‘unfair and unjust.’

  4. Bb. Pilipinas 2010 winners chosen; Ma. Venus Raj from Bicol to represent country in Miss Universe

    March 7, 2010 by ajay

I stayed up late tonight to blog, and caught the last leg of the annual Binibining Pilipinas pageant just in time. Before then, my friend Ojie told me the top title will already go to Candidate No. 11 Krista Kleiner but she turned out to be the Bb. Pilipinas International.

The top plum of the night, Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, went to an unknown – Ma. Venus Raj who stands at five feet nine and is described in her bio to be working as an information assistant for DENR Region 4. She had vital stats to die for though, and I knew what made her win – the 22 inch waistline! :D phew!

  5. The look of love, the look of Love Etc… by The Body Shop

    February 17, 2010 by ajay

God knows there’s no other best time to feel BLAH than when you’re pregnant. No salon agrees to color my hair (even though the grays are showing) and spas won’t even give me my regular massage by reason of my swollen belly. My digitally-permed tresses have grown out and I can’t have them straightened at this stage. Looks like everything has to wait until delivery!

That’s why I felt quite elated when publicist Char of Stratworks chose to invite me for a beauty event. It was the launch of the new Love Etc… line by The Body Shop in the runup to Valentine’s Day. I said yes without blinking for the main reason that hubby and I patronize The Body Shop products. In fact, one of my first gifts to him (when we were not yet married) was a Body Shop man’s scent he likes. The invite even looked more alluring because there was a promise of free fortune-telling, photobooth, and of course a make-up session, among other fun activities.

    Here’s Char and I, post-primping…. :D

    The Body Shop event

During the event, I discovered the brand’s new Love Gloss (P650) which is lipsmackingly good. It is certainly one of my favorite beauty products at the moment. A lip gloss guaranteed to give extra pucker and sparkle to your lips. It even comes with a unique applicator that is almost shaped like a heart.

The Miss World title has been elusive to the Philippines, for the most part. In decades of joining the pageant, our Binibining Pilipinas-World candidate still has to be acclaimed the fairest of them all. Still, we send our representative year after year, and this year it’s the turn of DLSU College of St. Benilde tourism student Marie Ann Umali. I have to admit she’s really lovely and has in fact been named a favorite by some internet sites. Question is, how will she fare with the rest of the 111 beautiful contestants in today’s Miss World 2009 finals at the Gallagher Convention Center in Johannesburg, South Africa?

  7. NUKS NUMUN moment: my digital perm at a Korean salon

    September 8, 2009 by ajay

NUKS NUMUN! is a popular phrase I hear from fellow bloggers these days. I figure that in this age of icanhazcheezburger, it’s a variation of the old and jaded Tagalog term of exclamation “naks naman!” (Wow!) As in “NUKS NUMUN! Buhay pa ba ang gumupit ng buhok mo, sis?” :D

Barely a month after getting the famous Ricky Reyes haircut, I was itching for change again. It was because my natural curls were showing themselves in their full unflattering glory, which made for an uneven field. It didn’t help that the hubby told me he wanted to see me get a perm before he flew home. So off I went to a Korean salon I’ve been eyeing for a long time, but haven’t tried, and conveniently located at the ground floor of the Pan Pacific hotel in Manila. Have to admit that I tried it just for kicks, as it wasn’t as busy as Tony and Jackey a few blocks away. And I really wanted to try a Korean digital perm.

It’s something that I won’t regret doing, as it made the whole process seem effortless. None of the icky smell that we traditionally know of the cold perm. I forgot the step-by-step process now but it did involve the usual procedure of shampooing/rinsing my hair, cutting (if necessary), drying, twirling my hair under curlers or hot rods and placing it under a rectangular heating machine.

  8. Make-up class with Artistry’s Victor Ortega

    August 20, 2009 by ajay

Last weekend, I was up early for one class I didn’t want to miss – make-up lessons with Victor Ortega of Artistry, the high-end make-up brand of Amway. Prior to this event, I’ve been canvassing make-up schools in Manila, more out of interest than anything else. Am not about to open a beauty salon soon, but it is one thing I really want to learn.

Even though I hardly use make-up myself, except for the reliable lipstick, I do believe that it goes a long way in enhancing one’s looks and aura. We should approach it like art, and used wrongly, it can make us look like zombies, hehe.

Artistry make-up class with Victor Ortega

Thankfully, Mr. Ortega is a proponent of the “natural look,” and this has made him popular in these parts (plugging:he has his own eponymous salons in Boracay).

For our class, he taught about how to do daytime make-up and transforming it with a few touches for the night. I caught a few precious lessons along the way.

  9. Brazilian Wax-ed! An hair-y, ouchy kind of funny story

    May 3, 2006 by ajay

Ever since reading last year the Bergdorf Blondes, I’ve been obsessed with getting a Brazilian Wax and am glad I was finally able to find time last night. The Brazilian was something that mystified me and this time being a summer, it is absolutely a must! However, the procedure is not really cheap and it’s not something that is offered by every spa in Manila. I had to choose between the Oasis in Hyatt and Sanctuario, which are both found in Malate. I finally had to settle for the latter because it’s nearer my workplace and ’twas about 200 pesos cheaper (…as my son says, “cheapskate!”)
