  1. Hello 2012 & remembering 2011…..

    December 31, 2011 by ajay

Where I sit, it’s less than two hours before we ring in 2012 … a year referred to with doom by some. Hope not! We remain optimistic and abide by the reference to our Catholic prayer about a “world without end.” After the tsunami that hit Japan in March and the damages caused by typhoons Pedring and Sendong in the Philippines, we can only pray that there’d be no more calamities of such magnitude that will visit us in the coming year.

As we say hello to 2012, am ready to offer a thanksgiving because 2011 was, overall, a good year. There were hurdles but I’d like to believe that the good outnumbered the bad. Here are some highlights of the passing year that I fondly remember:

    in Shanghai

    1. Travelling for the first time to China where I was awed by the degree of their advancement. I loved the cosmopolitan vibe of Shanghai while relishing the landmarks in Beijing. Two days after the tsunami that swept Japan, we flew to Osaka and I thanked the heavens that the Kansai region was largely unaffected. I was glad to visit the Land of the Rising Sun after five years and it never ceases to amaze me. May was the time I flew to Brisbane, Australia. I still regret not exploring the continent but I savored those few short days enjoying the sunshine and observing the laid back lifestyle in the Gold Coast.

On the domestic front, we went to Tagaytay, Subic, Pampanga, Cebu and Boracay. Had fun staying in topnotch establishments like Hotel H20, Discovery Shores & Crimson Mactan. God knows there are still a lot of places to be explored in these beautiful islands. On my wish list this year are Bohol, Bantayan Island, Sagada, CamSur and maybe more of Palawan. Cambodia, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and India for overseas destinations. Am not venturing far coz am really still not over my Asia fixation… yet :)

    2. what is travelling without food, right? Even so, am glad I don’t have to travel far to tickle my taste buds because the food scene in Manila is exciting as it is. So many restos are opening that it’s hard to keep track. Still, I can’t quite forget the lechon dinners we’ve had at General’s as well as Pepita’s Kitchen and being invited toa.Impressions at the Genting Club of Maxims Hotel, Resorts World Manila.

It was also worth knowing these restos in 2011: Chef Jessie, 2nd’s, Lugang Cafe, Firelake Grill, The Cheese Steak Shop, Zubuchon Cebu, Dolce Vita Manila, Jasmine @ New World Hotel, Vikings MOA, Le Bistro d’ Agathe, Mama’s Boracay, Mama Lou’s Italian Kitchen, Daniele’s Ristorante, Kenji Tei… to name just a few.

  2. Merry Christmas / Maligayang Pasko :)

    December 25, 2011 by ajay

So how was your Christmas? It is close to midnight and about to end here in the Philippines though the Christmas tree will be up until January. I love the season (but not the traffic!) mostly because I get a high from seeing all the gaily-decorated lights in buildings and people’s houses.

Mr. Z took care of the noche buena last night, mostly because I was too tired from working the graveyard shift the night before. We kept it simple on the table: steamed veggies, shepherd’s pie and this yummy pineapple upside down cornmeal cake …

Mr. Z's pineapple upside down cake was yummy:)

  3. Happy Halloween 2011

    October 31, 2011 by ajay

Hubby suggested that we dress up our youngest daughter as the Little Devil for her first Halloween party this year. It didn’t take long for me to find the costume in SM. It was as simple as putting the red cape with hood over her and a pair of mittens which she refused to wear. The devil pitchfork completed the ensemble. Our little angel seemed to have fun playing the role for the day.

    Halloween 2011

We joined the trick or treat party in Rockwell which was overflowing with people, never mind the price of P550 for one parent and kid.

We had a great time looking at other kids in costume. I am so beginning to love Halloween :)

First we saw Yoda in Powerplant Mall….

November 29 has also been declared a non-working holiday by Malacanang to commemorate Bonifacio Day which is traditionally held on November 30.

With President Aquino presently in Japan for the APEC Summit, the holiday announcement was made through the government’s Twitter account :D

Since November 29 falls on a Monday, this makes it a long weekend holiday for countless students, government and private sector workers throughout the country.

  5. November 16 holiday to celebrate Eid’l Adha announced

    November 10, 2010 by ajay

November 16, 2010 has been declared a holiday by Malacanang today to celebrate the Muslim feast of Eid’l Adha. As Nov. 16 falls on a Tuesday, this doesn’t qualify as a long weekend holiday, but at least the day off is still something that students, state and private sector workers will enjoy :D

The holiday announcement was made possible through Proclamation No. 60 signed by President Aquino.

Eid’l Adha is recognized under the law as a national holiday by virtue of Republic Act 9849. The date for the celebration of this holiday is movable, depending on the lunar cycle.

Earlier, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) headed by Secretary Bai Omera D. Dianalan Lucman recommended to Malacañang the declaration of the Nov. 16, saying the Islamic event is celebrated for at least three days in Arab and Muslim countries.

  6. 2010 Christmas bazaars in Manila: how to join

    October 4, 2010 by ajay

    Manila Ocean Park

An entrepreneur who is just new to the bazaar business would probably be at a loss on how to join the 2010 Christmas bazaars in Manila. It’s quite fairly easy. The trick is to be in the line early, to have nice products to sell and of course, have sufficient capital to pay bazaar fees.

Christmas bazaar organizers, especially the big ones, call for vendors as early as the first quarter or the first half of the year. When I made my post about the 2010 Christmas bazaars, I got a lot of inquiries on how to join. The best thing to do is to contact bazaar proponents. We’ve compiled a list of their contact numbers and hope you find them useful ;)

  7. September 10 2010 holiday to celebrate Eid’l Fitr, the end of Ramadan

    September 3, 2010 by ajay

Workers in the government and private sector in the Philippines brace for a long weekend next week as President Aquino proclaimed September 10 a regular holiday to observe Eid’l Fitr or the end of the holy month of Ramadan. September 10 falls on a Friday.

The declaration is contained in Proclamation No. 26 signed by the President. “To promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr,” it states.

  8. August 30 long weekend holiday

    August 28, 2010 by ajay

Much to the relief of private and government employees, Monday, August 30, has been declared a regular holiday by Malacanang to commemorate National Heroes Day. And so, everyone – who doesn’t work on Saturdays and Sundays – is once again looking forward to a long weekend holiday. This is after the August 23 holiday that some people were looking forward to didn’t materialize because Ninoy Aquino Day really is August 21.

Considering the aversion of President Noy Aquino to move actual days of a holiday to the nearest Monday, this now puts into doubt two other major holidays which Proclamation No. 1841 moves to the nearest Monday. The two coming holidays are Bonifacio Day on November 30 which falls this year on a Tuesday and December 30, Rizal Day, which falls on a Thursday. Proclamation 1841 declares that these regular holidays be observed on November 29 and December 27 instead.

  9. August 23, 2010 no longer a special holiday

    August 12, 2010 by ajay

While former President Arroyo subscribed to holiday economics, President Noynoy believes in economizing on holidays. As such, people should expect less holidays than usual under his term.

This is the case with the “long holiday weekend” everyone was looking forward to starting August 21,2010 Ninoy Aquino Day until August 23 which was declared by the previous administration a special holiday under Republic Act 9492 which required certain holidays to be moved to the nearest Monday.

It seems Malacanang has finally found a way in the “holiday economics” law by saying that it also empowers the President to modify said holidays by law, order or proclamation.
