  1. Safety risk assessment of Philippine airlines: PAL’s the most reliable carrier (part 1)

    March 25, 2011 by ajay

With most Filipinos now preferring to fly instead of ride ships, trains or buses, how safe are airlines in the Philippines?

    P1040584

A confidential report obtained by annalyn.net from PSA, an international business risk consultancy group, states that Philippine Airlines (PAL) remains the country’s most reliable carrier. It is so far the only one to pass stringent audits by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the IATA Operational Safety Audit for the past three years. PAL planes are serviced by the Lufthansa Technik Philippines which is a subsidiary of a global leader in aircraft and engine maintenance.

PAL’s record of 1.71 million flights since 1970 and its last fatal accident in 1994 puts it above Garuda Indonesia and slightly below Thai Airways in terms of safety in the Asia-Pacific region.

The fleet of Cebu Pacific or 5J is being maintained by SIA Engineering Co. Ltd. from Singapore, the same company which services Cathay Pacific, Delta, Air Canada and FedEx. The only thorn in Cebu Pacific’s record is the fatal crash of all 104 passengers onboard 5J Flight 387 bound for Cagayan de Oro in 1998. This was attributed to pilot error.

  3. Cebu Pacific edges out PAL as the country’s No. 1 airline, celebrates with one peso seat sale

    June 9, 2010 by ajay

    Cebu Pacific ATR 72-500

Update: Cebu Pacific one peso seat sale to all domestic destinations is on! This is from June 10 to June 11, 2010 only. Travel for (almost) free to these places: Manila, Cebu, Clark, Davao, Bacolod, Surigao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Dipolog, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, Puerto Princesa, Legazpi, Tagbilaran, Dumaguete, Busuanga and other exciting places. Travel will be valid from January 1 to March 31, 2011.

Philippine Airlines still has its loyalists ( and I still prefer it for the pleasure of having in-flight food) but if figures are to be believed, its rival Cebu Pacific is now officially the Philippines’ largest airline judging from the number of passengers flown on both domestic and international routes for the first quarter of 2010.

The Cebu Pacific website cited statistics from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) showing that CEB “flew 2,448,990 domestic and international passengers from January to March this year, almost 110,000 more than Philippine Airlines’ system-wide figures of 2,339,788.” It’s a close fight, but Cebu Pacific now claims to have a 51% share of the market, up 1% from last year’s 50% :D

In 2009, CEB flew 8.8 million passengers and it expects the numbers to increase by the end of the year with a projected 10 million passengers flown for the whole of 2010.

  4. Cebu Pacific gets flak for refusing to carry special child

    January 7, 2010 by ajay

Cebu Pacific horror stories are in the air again. On Facebook and Twitter tonight, Cebu Pacific is getting some flak from online denizens for refusing to carry a special child. In this case, a child with global developmental delay.

The reports are sketchy as of yet, but online folks are crying foul to this move by Cebu Pacific which takes pride in its slogan “Now Every Juan Can Fly.” This time around, the budget airline is being compared to its rival PAL (Philippine Air Lines) which reportedly has a more humanitarian policy toward senior citizens and persons with disability.

It appears from the tweets that an unnamed Cebu Pacific flight compelled the special child to get off the plane due to his/her disorder and because there was another special child onboard. They can only accommodate one special child, not two. This of course made the affected parents fume with anger and pass on the word online, and virally.

  5. Latest service from Cebu Pacific: a Travel Fund for cancelled, rebooked and rescheduled flights

    December 7, 2009 by ajay

Most passengers find it a hassle to rebook, reschedule or even cancel their flights. But a new service from Cebu Pacific solves the problem by giving travelling Juans new options. This is in the form of the Travel Fund it introduced effective December 1. The Travel Fund works like a cellphone load or virtual wallet where flyers can store the value of their unused airline tickets, to be credited for later use.

Also under the airline’s new rules, a person who is unable to use his/her airline ticket can now transfer it to another person, but will be charged with the corresponding name change fee.

In a meeting with travel bloggers, Cebu Pacific’s corporate communications team led by Ms. Viveca Singson said the travel fund program gives CebuPac customers more options. The idea of an electronic wallet is actually practiced by other low-cost carriers in the world but Cebu Pacific now holds the distinction of being the first one to introduce it in the country.

Some of the terms and conditions in the program:

  6. This Cebu Pacific Wandering Juan went to …… Coron, Palawan

    October 4, 2009 by ajay

    Coron

Our trip to Coron, Palawan last September would prove to be one of the most memorable ever, especially for this blogger who is Little Miss Afraid of Plane Rides :D I really should know better than ride a propeller plane on bad weather, but there was simply the inescapable lure of Coron beckoning me and the hubby on our planned second honeymoon.

Our plane wasn’t even half-full when we left NAIA Terminal 2 that morning. I felt comforted by a group of giggling college students who were having the time of their lives taking group pictures before the flight. Like us, they were excited because this was their first trip to Coron too. I would see the same college students holding the motion discomfort bags 30 minutes later, when it became evident that the plane ride was far from being pleasant.

On the other hand, Mr. Z – who’s used to riding helicopters- considered it normal, even though at one point he commented: “I don’t know why they’re flying into the clouds, when they should be over the clouds.”

I distract myself by talking to the stewardess:

Me: Miss, have you been in a flight this, ehrmm, turbulent?
    FA: Yes ma’am.
Me: Oh well, what flight was it?
    FA: In an Airbus.
Me: Oh. So why hasn’t the pilot spoken since the flight started?
(and before Miss FA can answer me, the pilot is finally overheard on the PA system)

Pilot: Ladies and gentlemen, we are now approaching Busuanga Airport. Please expect light to moderate turbulence before we land…..

    WAAAHHH!

  7. Airport security: how safe are we?

    July 23, 2009 by ajay

    NAIA 3

Call me a paranoid traveller. It’s not just plane claustrophobia that gets to me when I fly. I also get to be very observant of fellow passengers. And I try hard to notice my surroundings closely, yes.:D

It helped that me and my officemates flew six times to three Philippine cities this month, which is quite a record for someone like me who prefers land trips. Okay, we flew Cebu Pacific and the time helped me get acquainted with operations at a few of the country’s airports, including the Cebu Pacific terminal in NAIA 3.

My rating: HG. Hoy Gising! (hey, wake up!)

The first time I was at NAIA 3 was before an early 4:55 a.m. flight to Bacolod. I couldn’t believe it. The two personnel who were supposed to man the x-ray machines of incoming luggages weren’t doing their work at all! Man on the right was reading a tabloid while the lady on the left end was talking to her fellow employee about what to have for breakfast. Both of them weren’t looking at their machines while the bags passed through.

Sure, there were uniformed security personnel as soon as we entered the terminal, but what can human eyes do compared to the work of metal detectors and x-ray machines?

This incident got me into a conversation with a friend who observed the same thing. He said he even went to the airport one night to buy a plane ticket (this time at the Centennial Terminal) and he was able to pass through an Off Limits area without anyone reprimanding him. I didn’t observe the same thing, but he noted that security is even more lax at the Mactan International Airport in Cebu where personnel would let you pass without checking you. How true?

    July 14, 2009 by ajay

  9. The airline wars: PAL or Cebu Pacific?

    March 12, 2009 by ajay

Over at Plurk yesterday, I asked my friends which airline they preferred – Philippine Airlines or Cebu Pacific – and the ensuing thread got a few interesting answers.Let us attempt to point their differences, one by one:

    Fares

CebuPac: Cebu Pacific’s aggressive marketing makes it appear that they’re the budget airline to beat. Promos for seat sales are announced almost every week. There was only one time that I availed of their zero fare, and that was unluckily when Typhoon Milenyo struck. Ticket was non-refundable. Since then, I haven’t booked for a CebuPac promo which are always filled up anyway.

PAL: The silent player in the price wars. Some people attest to the fact that PAL fares come out even cheaper than the much-hyped offerings of its competitor. It’s now offering Econolight which is priced cheaper than Fiesta Class and comes with no meals, only 15 kg baggage allowance and you will be seated at the back. Still, its meant for the market segment dominated by its rival.

    Airplanes

CebuPac : Its DC9 planes are really obsolete, as DC9s trace back to the 60s. But its official website does not list the DC9s, only the Airbus and the ATR 72-500.

PAL : Perceived to have newer fleet than the other, even though it is Asia’s oldest airline.

    Cabin crew:

CebuPac: Younger (pilots and flight attendants.)

    PAL: Older :D
