  2. A YUMMY cooking demo + some recipes

    August 28, 2011 by ajay

I’ve been attending a lot of cooking demos lately. It’s nice to learn all these previously unheard of tips from the top chefs and it strengthens my assumption that not every detail and technique are written in cookbooks. You gotta find your own style in cooking and hear it from the masters themselves. You can only do this by seeing them up close.

YUMMY Magazine was kind enough to sponsor a cooking demo by Tristan Encarnacion, the young resident chef of the early morning show Unang Hirit. One part of Robinsons Supermarket was crowded that day with an audience who were raptly listening to Chef Tristan teach the following recipes: chicharon rice, crispy laing pockets, lumpiang sariwa and chicken curry in gata.

  3. Yummy Eats at the Fort: all the good things!

    May 24, 2011 by ajay

I was excited to attend the YUMMY Eats food fair at The Fort over the weekend, mostly because I knew the vendors would be among the best this city has to offer. Glad to say I wasn’t disappointed.

Thumbs up to the zoning of the event venue, the NBC Tent, on the big day because it wasn’t crowded and stifling. The Yummy Magazine team carefully picked the 31 food retailers who would sell their products that day, with a little bit of everything to sample from each category – from drinks to cakes to the ultimate tummy fillers like lechon.

I ended up buying the following things: two liters of Holly’s Milk, sinaing na tulingan from Farm and Deli Enterprises, cheese pimiento from Bean & Baker, one jar of Honey Shrimp Sauce (the new bagoong!) and several pieces of Big Daddy’s Chicken for the kids.

Likewise, the hubby bought jam from The Fruit Garden and the Gasul coin bank which is the miniature version of the gas tank… cute! The tub of Russian tea cookies from Classic Confections was really delicious…. I couldn’t help nibbling one after the other. Of course, I wanted to buy more but I was restrained by the thought of too many unopened merchandise in the kitchen…it’s not really practical anymore. I swear I could have bought more because there were lots of nice food items in this fair. It’s great to discover new sellers!

So yes, here are my notes from the event:

The dessert I went back to for seconds and thirds was the buko pie martini of The Chef’s Table. Is it a drink? No. Is it a cake? No. Better ask Chef Bruce Lim what it is. I did taste pastry crust at the bottom, coconut milk and slivers of soft macapuno. This was my favorite sweet treat at the event!

The Photogenic award definitely goes to the Little Miss OC Kitchen because of their cute cupcakes which are inspired by popular video games like Angry Birds & Plants vs Zombies. There’s nothing like it! Browse their Flickr portfolio some more and you’d be surprised to know that Little Miss OC creates the most fanciful designs in their cakes – from Louis Vuitton bags to Barbie :D

  4. Memorable first quiche: from a YUMMY recipe

    May 29, 2010 by ajay

    Quiche (pronounced keesh) –noun
a pielike dish consisting of an unsweetened pastry shell filled with a custard and usually containing cheese and other ingredients, as vegetables, seafood, or ham: spinach quiche.

    via dictionary.com

Making a quiche is high on my list of must-do kitchen projects. Luckily, with the birth of our baby and a loving husband who’s hands on in helping take care of her, my motivation is high to whip up something special. Yes indeed, the advent of a special moment calls for a mini-celebration, like the roasted tomato, caramelized onion and olive quiche which greeted us for breakfast this Friday morning.

Thanks to Yummy Magazine’s May 2010 issue for the recipe of this lovely quiche. A bit fussy to make but which gave me a satisfying sense of fulfillment to finish. Before this, I was quite content sampling Starbucks’ quiche lorraine with a tall glass of San Pellegrino arranciata. Now I can very well savor this at home, or share with friends at the next potluck party.

What I like about quiches is that they’re filling, yet healthy. A vegetarian or somebody who wants to lose weight (okay, that’s me) can choose veggies, seafood and herbs for the toppings, pop ‘em in the oven and go. YUMMY’s current issue devotes six pages of pictures and recipes for an assortment of quiches, using delectable ingredients like pumpkin, feta, basil, mushroom, goat cheese, salami and the whole lot of them. I chose Roasted Tomato, Caramelized Onion and Olive because I had the ingredients in our pantry. Besides, didn’t I tell you this was special? ;)

  5. Mr. Jones, Greenbelt 5

    May 3, 2010 by ajay

    Mr. Jones, Greenbelt 5

Just when I thought I was becoming tired of the Greenbelt restaurants comes now Mr. Jones. It was certainly nice to meet “him” that warm Thursday afternoon, looking every bit like the hip diner I can hang out for hours and hours in. Hmm, I wonder if they have free wifi ~ my attention seems to have been focused on all the food awaiting us.

With two appetizer rounds, a sampling of three main courses, dessert and an ice-cream filled drink, the tasting that awaited us was particularly heavy. I should have skipped lunch :D

We were in Mr. Jones coz it collaborated with Red Ribbon and my favorite food magazine Yummy for a special tasting menu composed of house favorites and some concoctions from the Yummy test kitchen. I can’t wait to bring my family to this diner as they like milkshakes, waffles and the whole lot of ‘em. And the decor is just so comfy-chic and welcoming.

What was served on the table:

    Mr. Jones beef tapa

The resto’s much-raved about US beef ribcap tapa and garlic overload (P295). I am mentioning this first, but this was actually served last :D Mr. Jones is an American-style diner, all right, but their fresh take on the local tapsilog is most recommended by those who’ve been here. The serving is generous, and the meat is tender because of the thin, sukiyaki-style cut. Pair this with garlic chips, atsara, vinegar and eggs, any style, and one is easily transported to the tapsilog heaven of our dreams.

  6. A YUMMY dinner at Tosca, Dusit Thani Manila

    December 10, 2009 by ajay

I have been a fan of the local YUMMY Magazine for the longest time. I always make it a point to buy the latest issue from the nearest Ministop or 7-Eleven, and have gotten a kick from trying out some of the recipes as well. I have just one complaint from this magazine: viewing its pages never fail to make me hungry. The pictures seem to leap from the confines of colorful paper and ink, looking ready to be eaten! My friends agree as well :D

That is why when the invite from Yummy came for their media Christmas dinner (thanks Fran and Ro!), I was excited to attend. The venue was the elegant Tosca Italian restaurant of the Dusit Thani hotel in Makati which had this impressive wine cellar.

The menu for the night: Potato Sour Creme Soup with Lemon-Grilled Shrimps and Tarragon; Chicken Breast Filled with Marinated Apricot, Orange-Cinnamon Couscous and Green Asparagus. For dessert, we had Trilogie of Vanilla and Red Wine Creme with Caramelized Mango. The chosen dishes didn’t really remind me of Italian food (as I know it) but I must agree with the others that the dessert was heavenly.

I also had fun taking pics of YUMMY editors and staff who make the magazine exciting and worth reading issue after issue.
