A few weeks before Christmas, we were invited to witness the grand finals of the SM Hypermarket Best Pinoy Street Food cook-off. I made sure to attend since the venue, SM Sucat, is just a stone’s throw away from where we live. It was a chance to witness some of the metro’s best street cooks showcase their best dishes in terms of creativity and taste. Plus there was the bonus of hobnobbing with Kusina Master Chef Boy Logro who acted as one of the judges.
Wefie with Chef Boy!
It’s a big deal to win for the contestants because of the prizes at stake. The grand prize winner gets to have his or her very own food stall at SM Hypermarket rent-free for a year as well as P100,000 pesos worth of prizes needed to start the business. This includes large food packs, ingredients, cooking equipment, and other materials courtesy of SM Hypermarket’s Food Service Center.
After several qualification rounds, this lady emerged the champion: Angelica Libed of Aling Mila’s Food Delivery and Catering representing SM Hypermarket Valenzuela.
Angelica bested the other finalists from the different SM branches in Metro Manila, namely Raymond Sombilon of Mangkuk Ilonggo representing SM Hypermarket Sucat, Angelica Bonifacio of Inbisito Eatery representing SM Hypermarket FTI
and Erlinda B. Franco of Madam’s Eatery representing SM Hypermarket Cainta.
Apart from the cook-off, there was also food fair that featured the dishes of contestants from the Best Pinoy Street Food competition as well as all-time Pinoy favorite food stalls. Lola Ebeng’s Prito, Sabaw, at Kulinarya, owned by last year’s Grand Champion Jones Guevara was present showcasing his award-winning recipes.
