This dish mystified me, I simply had to order it. Is it a pasta, or a dessert? Judge for yourself. But the fact that it was placed in the cake counter made me think: surely, that is a dessert? The next thing to do was taste it. Aah, the magic of the pastry bag! It is actually a tart with a spiral shaped cream frosting that tasted like almond and some nut (maybe ginko nut?) Kinda hard to imagine since am not a pastry chef but yes, the magic you can do with the right tools. ... Continue Reading...
In Singapore: the ION Orchard basement Food Hall
It's amazing to see how Singapore has changed in a year's time since I went there. There's a lot of activity in the landscape, as judged by construction cranes all over the place. Take for example the new mall, ION Orchard, which is beside the Wisma Atria and Takashimaya on Orchard Road. Mostly I went here because some friends of mine were talking about its food court, which is now shadowing the Food Republic in terms of its offerings. Initial impression: awesome! In a place like Singapore, am quite content not to be eating in hotel and other fining dining places. ... Continue Reading...
Whistlestop Restaurant Makati : open 24/7 since 1977
I am quite surprised to learn that Manila's famous Whistlestop Restaurant has been open since 1977. Oh well, I was still a child then, innocent of all the beguiling ways of food. By the 1980s, it was already an institution, and roaring well into the 90s, until it met an untimely death in 2005, for the reason that its original owners chose to migrate to other shores. But as most legends go, some nostalgic fellas are bound to save it because they still believe in the name. And so it goes: there's no stopping Whistlestop. The new owners, young entrepreneurs Lex Ledesma ... Continue Reading...
Hainanese chicken rice, anyone? My search for the best Singaporean resto in Manila begins here
I've been to Makansutra in Manila Ocean Park several times, and I have to agree with the others that it's quite a letdown. The concept of having several hawker stalls in one cozy environment is nice, but the quality of the food is not something which will make me excited to go back there again. Case in point is the soggy wantan mee I got the last time and the teenie-weenie stick of chicken satay. Same with the Malaysian restaurants in Manila. I still have to find one which will completely impress me, including the ones found in the malls. So I've only been to ... Continue Reading...
Four new dishes from Max’s Restaurant … and Piolo Pascual
Max's Restaurant is a classic. I just think their fried chicken is the most amazing thing in the world. Fried chicken with the falling-off-to-the-bone goodness of roast chicken, if you know what I mean. We locals take it for granted, but it is something that should be tasted when you're in the Philippines for the first time. (note: like Jollibee, they do have overseas branches. In California and Hawaii). It was absolutely a hit when my American mother-in-law visited this resto during her maiden visit to RP. Simple joys! :D And because Max's is one of my family's ...
