A tragic loss

September 29, 2004 ·

Nini tagged me along last night to the wake of her former staffer, Jose Luis Villanueva, who was senselessly killed in a cellphone robbery incident on a travelling bus along EDSA Friday night. Jose was only 29 years old, a handsome young man who left a sheltered upbringing to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. The eldest among nine children of multi-millionaire parents, he was educated in New York's Fordham U but chose to absorb himself in Manila's rough-and-tumble media world. He could have chosen to live on their mansion but as his friends would say, Jose ... Continue Reading...

Am a Bora virgin….no more!

September 26, 2004 ·

It is so nice to be writing this blog from Boracay and being able to announce to my readership that I am now enjoying the good life in this little piece of island paradise south of the Philippines. And so....the definitive statement is: am a Bora virgin... no more! Though I have seen the nudist beaches of Europe and grew up in a house by the sea in my hometown which is now also known as a sought-after diving destination in the Philippines, Boracay is still a dream come true for me. Heaven is when the blue sky meets the green sea amid a fascinating backdrop of sailboats ... Continue Reading...

An Enchanted Day

September 23, 2004 ·

Me & the twins at Bleeker St. Photography, EK .Last Sunday, I brought the kids to Enchanted Kingdom which is the Philippines own mini-version of Disneyland (minus Mickey & the gang). My best friend couldn't believe that I didn't bring the nanny along. But I was in the Extra Challenge mode. Nannies are sometimes a burden because you have pay extra for the entrance (and at Enchanted, this was not cheap). Besides, nannies do act more brattish than the wards they are supposed to look after. And so I was wondering if I could survive the day with three hyperactive tots. I ... Continue Reading...

Mooncake madness

September 23, 2004 ·

What is the Mooncake Festival and why are the Chinese crazy about them at this time of the year?According to tradition, the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar is the time when the moon is said to be at its fullest, brightest and nearest to the earth. As such, it is a good excuse for all Chinese families to get together and celebrate the occasion.I didn't know about this until my Rotarian buddies told me we had to attend a Mooncake Party as we were co-hosts of the event. "Come one, come all! Dinner's for free with prizes galore," enticed our club ... Continue Reading...

Austerity message hits home

September 18, 2004 ·

The buzzword among state employees now is Administrative Order 103 "directing the continued adoption of austerity measures in government." This effectively cuts all foreign and local travels, unless urgent; paid media advertisements; the conduct of trainings, seminars, celebrations and cultural or sports activities; as well as the grant of all donations, contributions, and gifts. Likewise, a reduction in the consumption of fuel, water, office supplies and electricity has been decreed, and the grant of new or additional benefits to full-time officials and employees has ...
