  1. Dayrit’s : revisiting an old favorite

    July 13, 2010 by ajay

Our baby is now two months old! We regularly visit her pedia and it’s good that the clinic is located in a little-known foodie destination called Paseo de Magallanes. We tried Bob’s in Paseo before and this time around, it was my turn to revisit the familiar old tastes of Dayrit’s – one of Manila’s original burger joints.

Dayrit’s only now has two remaining branches – Magallanes and The Fort (see end of this post for the complete address). Their main branch in Magallanes is supremely no-frills. However, it easily gets filled during peak hours with people craving for their time-tested specialties which include the roast beef and burgers.

Long before the birth of today’s jumbo burgers, Dayrit’s had its Big D Burger (sold now for P185). It’s as big as a plate and can be shared by two to four persons for a single serving. I like the beefy, juicy taste of their burgers. When a friend of mine went home from Canada a few years ago, this was what she was craving for. Shown here is their cheeseburger todo (P170), so called because it comes complete with lettuce and tomato.

Of course, their roast beef is such a joy to eat – tender and made flavorful by a separate serving of savory gravy. A roast beef plate (P300) comes with baked potato topped with cheese and bacon bits, veggies, plus a choice of mashed potato or rice.

  2. 2 Manila hotels & 1 Boracay resort make it to Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2010

    July 11, 2010 by ajay

    Makati Shangri-La lobby

…. and the distinction goes to:

Top 25 City Hotels in Asia:

    No. 13 – Makati Shangri-La

No. 15 – The Peninsula Manila

    Top 15 Resorts on Asia

No. 14 – Discovery Shores, Boracay

I have stayed in the first two, but haven’t been to Discovery Shores so we’re definitely putting it in our list. The Philippine establishments made it by a hairline in the awards. Still, it’s nice to know they’ve consistently adhered to international standards and we hope they have a higher ranking next year.

  4. Chris Tiu joins public health advocacy against HPV

    July 9, 2010 by ajay

    Chris Tiu advocacy

We admire basketball star and barangay kagawad (of Urdaneta Village, Makati) Chris Tiu for being the face of a new campaign to raise public awareness against sexually-transmitted infection dubbed ” Help Fight HPV.” For him, it’s not a multi-million peso endorsement for a mobile phone or power drink. Still, the benefits are priceless since it will warn the public, especially the young and carefree, about the health risks of contracting the human papilloma virus or HPV.

Sure, HPV is not the same as HIV or AIDS, but the effects are equally menacing. Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems but sometimes, certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in men and women. Other HPV types may cause cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers.

As such, Help Fight HPV was launched earlier this year by global pharmaceutical company MSD, medical groups such as UP-PGH OB-Infectious Disease Section, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the Philippines, Philippine Society of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy, and patient support group Carewell.

  5. Amoroma : best Italian resto in Tagaytay

    July 8, 2010 by ajay

I was never able to visit the much-acclaimed Italian resto Amoroma all the time it was in Alabang. That old place is closed, and now am glad this “best-kept secret resto” has permanently settled in Tagaytay. You’ll see it if you use the Sta. Rosa Road. It now even boasts of a bed and breakfast!

  6. Summit Ridge Hotel & Promenade, Tagaytay City

    July 8, 2010 by ajay

I sorely missed travelling the whole time I was pregnant. That is why our short trip to Tagaytay City last weekend was memorable. It was also our first time to tag along our barely two month-old baby Lucia. We stayed at the Summit Ridge Hotel which was kind enough to invite us for an overnight stay to try their facilities and amenities.

    Summit Ridge Hotel Tagaytay

Summit Ridge, owned by the Robinsons Group, is the newest luxury hotel to rise in the city. I must say its direct competition is the Taal Vista Hotel controlled by taipan Henry Sy of SM. In fact, the SM and Robinsons malls will soon slug it out in the city, with SM Supercenter slated to open in 2011.

In the hotel category, Taal Vista remains an institution and projects more elegance. Its location with a nearer view of Taal Lake and the volcano is unequalled at present. But I must say Summit Ridge is catching up fast. More affordable room rates and the advantage of having a mini mall – the Promenade – beside it, with its array of coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, hardware store, gaming arcade and even a Robinsons supermarket. I like the whole idea because it can be a hassle driving around Tagaytay, or commuting here.

  8. President Noynoy (P-Noy) and the growing anti- wang wang movement

    July 5, 2010 by ajay

    No to wang wang

Shalani Soledad on the origins of President Noynoy’s ‘no wang wang policy,’ in this Manila Bulletin interview before the May 10 2010 elections:

” I have to tell you this. Si Noy, after Senate hours, ayaw na niyang ginagamit ‘yung plaka nung senator. Pinapatanggal na niya ‘yun. Kahit past 12 na or one, ayaw niya ‘yung nagse-swerve. Dun ka lang sa proper lane mo. At kahit na one o’ clock in the morning na ‘yan, kapag naka-stop ‘yan, kahit wala kang ibang kasabay, you should follow traffic rules and regulations.”

No wonder, a policy against the use of blinkers and wang wang was one of P-noy’s first acts as the President. While I agree that his failure to avail of his privilege to use a wang wang can be a serious security issue, It should be a problem to be solved by his security men. Perhaps they can clear the road ahead of his arrival? What I am saying is that the President’s move is enjoying too much popularity for him to stop. And stopping his non-use of wang wang at this point in time will be a case of too much, too soon. President Noynoy should continue suffering in Manila’s traffic, if only to shame road abusers and demonstrate that there is equal opportunity for all in our streets, an opportunity that has long been abused by those in power.

  9. Franchise 2010 slated at SMX Convention Center on July 14-18

    July 4, 2010 by ajay

    Franchise Expo

Franchise 2010: The 18th Philippine International Franchise Conference and Expo (PIFCE) will unfold on July 14-18, 2010 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

The event should be of interest to entrepreneurs and business-minded people looking at franchising as a way out of the corporate rut. According to studies, start-up businesses have a high failure rate of 75%, as opposed to the success rate of franchises at 90%, making the latter a viable option indeed if one is seriously looking at alternative streams of income.

Organized by the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) and co-presented by PLDT Business Solutions and PLDT SME Nation, Franchise 2010 offers four events in one: a conference on July 14 and 15; a three-day expo on July 16-18; franchise seminars; and the Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) program on July 2 and 13, at the AIM Conference Center Makati.
