  1. Love from my little Picasso

    August 28, 2006 by ajay

When a casting agent gave his business card to my son (handsome daw), the little tot wasn’t at all enthusiastic. Knowing him, he’s not really the type who’d feel comfortable facing the cameras. What he feels a close affinity with is the computer, like most members of his generation. And he’s got a number of files on Microsoft Paint to show for it…like this one.

  2. Growing up fast

    August 28, 2006 by ajay

And so I’ve found out that one of the hardest things about parenthood is dealing with ‘teeth troubles.’ Dionne has lost two of her front choppers, Dianne has one waiting to be plucked and Paolo still has to grow out a couple of his baby teeth.

And I realized while looking at them at play yesterday that they are indeed growing up fast! While most people would tell me “you have so many kids!,” I do think three is just right :P I’d be hard put fussing over just one kid but with three, I can always let them scamper around knowing that one will always look after the other.

And even though I know something will always be missing in my life, I know that with them around, my life will always be complete.

  3. Pagliacci: Italian food (with the Italian temper?)

    August 23, 2006 by ajay

Pagliacci at the Podium is one of the few Italian places in Manila that has an Italian owner and chef. It was my second time to eat here and sample the varied items on the menu, especially since other people were paying. The last condition is important since I’ve pretty much given up shelling out my hard-earned money for “over-rated” pasta outside when I can very well cook it at home.

  4. Meeting The Banana, at last

    August 22, 2006 by ajay

I take off from my blog routine to pay tribute to my blog friend Anna Banana who flew in from South Korea last week. Of course I had to meet her! And she was sweet enough to go out of her way to meet me! She who had been privy to my frustrations with kimchi and other life matters the past months. It was nice to know that she was as wacky and engaging in person as she is online (as is often the case with the blog pals I meet. Call it lucky!)

We were joined by reel- and real-life couple Jher and Jerome who were quite a revelation in themselves, being such fun-tabulous persons to be with. The last I heard, the 2Js were up in arms against the homophobic column of a macho columnist in one major paper who has said “Let us be warned against the gay population, which is per se a compromise between the strong and the weak and therefore only somewhat and not the absolute of either of the two qualities. Be alert lest the Philippine flag be made of delicate lace and adorned with embroidered frills.” Sus, how could this so out-of-touch man say this when some of us admittedly love our gay friends to pieces?!

  5. Back on Track

    August 21, 2006 by ajay

This blog is back on track, thanks to my superhero and webhost, Yuga. This site now uses the latest WordPress version, and I like the fact that the reader can choose to view this blog according to one’s personal preferences. If you go to the upper left hand corner, there’s a cuztomization tool bar where you can choose the size of the font, left hand or right hand navigation, the width of the layout etc. Kewl! I am still in the process of reconstructing my links so please bear with me.

Speaking of Yuga, he hails from Guimaras and I can just cry at that beautiful province which is now ravaged by the biggest oil spill in Philippine history. I was fortunate enough to visit there last summer where I spent time a memorable time with media friends at Costa Aguada Island Resort and even toured their majestic secluded beaches. I wonder what will happen to all that now..tsk!tsk!

  6. Hacked!

    August 19, 2006 by ajay

I logged on yesterday to find that my site “cannot be displayed.” After inquiry with my administrator, he told me that my site had been hacked. Gone were my design, my plug-ins and other what-nots. Surprisingly I wasn’t such in a panic mode and am glad that Yuga, the man behind my webhost, was helpful enough in recovering my posts, thanks to this site’s back-up. I don’t know what could have triggered the hacking. All I know is that I have freely given my passwords to several people who’ve cared enough to improve the appearance of this blog. My editor said it could also be that my server wasn’t secure at one particular time. It’s all water under the bridge now.

  7. Razon’s Halo-Halo, Susie’s Cuisine & Mely’s Sisig.. simply superb!

    August 16, 2006 by ajay

    Razons

My Coolness! Razon’s Halo-Halo is simply superb. I haven’t been to any of their branches in Manila and so cannot do a comparative taste test but the one we tried at their outlet in NepoMart, Angeles City was a piece of heaven on earth.

For the benefit of our foreign readers, halo-halo (literally translated into mix-mix …??!!) is a Filipino dessert composed of assorted toppings placed at the bottom of a tall glass (hmm, in that case it is no longer a topping but an underling, lol) then heaped with shaved ice, drizzled with milk then topped again with either leche flan or ube haleya or both.

Well, I liked Razon’s mix because it wasn’t too sweet and the finely-shaved ice didn’t feel coarse in my mouth; in fact, it melted in my mouth as nice quality ice would. As for the toppings, I’ve tasted better elsewhere (like the sweetened kundol & tubo ng niyog in Pagsanjan’s Aling Taleng’s Halo-Halo) but Razon’s still comes out a winner. Hope quality doesn’t suffer with their mass-production; I guess it’s still worth it to try the one at its place of birth in Pampanga.

  8. Ole! Great Mexican food at Zapata’s

    August 15, 2006 by ajay

    Zapata's - mosaic

Barely two hours after our hearty American lunch at VFW, interrupted by a little shopping-cum-walking exercise around the sprawling Puregold Supermarket inside the former Clark Air Base, we were ready to munch on great Mexican food at Zapata’s.

This place was quite a revelation to me as I didn’t expect it to exist beside those rinky-dink bars that surround Clark’s Perimeter Road. Its heavy wooden door had a sign that said “Open/Abierto” and as we stepped inside, we were treated to its colorful interiors, notably the red and green chairs and the giant replica of a cactus which reminded moi of those tequila plantations in Mexico. Furthermore, the place was gaily decorated with eyecatching Mexican hats, brightly patterned ceramic plates and other curios. All these prepared us for our delicious Mexican meal ahead.

  9. Good ol’ American food at VFW Post 2485 Canteen

    August 13, 2006 by ajay

With barely two hours’ drive on the spanking new stretch of the North Luzon Expressway, there’s no reason why Angeles City shouldn’t be the must have/must eat there! foodie destination. I used to think that this city had just about sunk to oblivion with the closure of the US military bases in Clark as I saw the run-down buildings and the isolated bars on Fields Avenue but I proved to be mistaken. If you’re motivated enough, you’d realize why the cabalens reign supreme when it comes to food, boasting of – not just their irresistible Kapampangan cooking – but also a fusion of other flavors like Swiss, Italian, Japanese, Korean and a host of other cuisines.

Take for instance our visit to the VFW Post 2485 Canteen . Due to its nondescript structure and out-of-the-way location, we were almost ready to adjudge it Angeles City’s best-kept secret. I knew I liked this place the moment we set foot here for lunch on the first leg of our food trip. The interiors which boasted of a pub-like atmosphere were a bit too dark for moi but a look at the apple pies on display signalled down-home American cooking. You know, the type you can plunk down your spoon and fork to with their large servings, huge pieces of meat, and everything else.

  10. Forget-your-diet, ultimate food trip to Angeles City, Pampanga

    August 12, 2006 by ajay

My blog amnesia must have really gotten so bad when I get trans-continental phone calls and YM messages asking me “what happened??” It’s only been more than a week since I last posted and yet friends and dear readers already think it’s not normal. Yeah, you’re probably right: am suffering from sort of blog withdrawal syndrome. Which is not fair considering that some people are addicted to this blog like they need coffee in the morning. For reasons I don’t know. I also used to be addicted to this blog myself. :P

However, am glad that it only took a road trip to Central Luzon with my blog friends to get me moving again. Specifically, a food adventure through the gastronomic bowl that is the province in Pampanga. And to think that we’ve only scraped the surface of Angeles City yet in a one-of-a-kind food marathon that consisted of eat-shop-eat-shop-and eat again.
