  1. The Philippines’ star karters are training their way to Formula One (F1)

    August 9, 2009 by ajay

On an overcast Sunday, Claire invites me to Enchanted Kingdom to see something I don’t normally go out of my way of: a karting event. Specifically, it was the fifth leg of the Magnolia Karting Series held in the sprawling EK field. “You gotta see these boys from the Ready2Race team, they’re really good!” she says. I oblige, mainly because the kids and I haven’t been to Enchanted Kingdom for a long time. Secondly, I wanted to learn something new, and karting is it.

If you’re crazy about the F1 races, you’d relate to this. It appears that the Philippines has been doing very well in international karting competitions and might as well be on the way to producing the first F1 racer. I was surprised to learn that the sport is by far one of the most expensive to maintain too. Which fairly explains why today’s pool of young karters come from exclusive enclaves like the International School, De la Salle Zobel, Brent and the whole lot of them. Cost for buying your own go kart with an engine and maintaining it easily tops P1 million a year.

  2. Breakfast joys: Jollibee pancake sandwich atbp.

    August 8, 2009 by ajay

I agree with what the health experts say: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Can’t miss it! This is actually one of those times when I’d go fastfood. The uber-affordable prices in the leading chains has made dining out an affordable option. As parents or office workers, no longer are we so harassed to bring out those pans and kettles because we just have to buzz the Drive-Thru and it will be ready in two minutes.

There was actually a time when I was late for work and waited through traffic while rushing to eat corned beef, egg and garlic rice with a plastic spoon from a styrofoam container. And where did I buy that? Good ol’ Jollibee! The variety of their choices is simply the best there is. This is the easiest place to go, for example, when your balikbayan relative is hankering for a traditional Filipino breakfast. In photo: Jollibee crispy bangus with sunny side up egg and tomatoes-

Actually, one of my favorites is their pancake sandwich – a pair of yummy hotcakes placed over a round-shaped scrambled egg and their trademark patty. You can also order extra cheese.

  3. LP 69 : Almusal (breakfast)

    August 6, 2009 by ajay

It’s always a miracle to wake up to a brand new day, and even if yesterday was full of sadness…. we have to celebrate life and prepare for another moment in the jungle … by eating breakfast!

  4. A People Power funeral shaping up for former President Aquino

    August 5, 2009 by ajay

Over in Barrio Siete, I talk about how a People Power funeral is shaping up for the late Former President Cory Aquino who will be buried beside her husband Ninoy later today at the Manila Memorial Park. The Aquino family has eschewed state honors so her remains can spend some time in church (Manila Cathedral), being known as deeply religious in her lifetime. Judging from the throngs of people who paid their respects and lined up in the streets the past few days, there’s no preventing Tita Cory’s admirers and supporters from flocking to the cemetery to attend her burial, despite the threat of wind and rain.

These pictures are kinda late, but this is what I took of the crowd and the Aquino funeral cortege which passed by in front of our office building in Roxas Boulevard the other day. The crowds may not have been as thick as the one on Ayala Avenue, but it was overwhelming just the same. I can’t describe the feeling, but we certainly didn’t mind waiting for a long time just for a glimpse of her casket and her outspoken celebrity daughter Kris.

    August 1, 2009 by ajay

The country goes in mourning today with the announcement of the death of former President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino, the 11th President of the Philippines and symbol of the historic EDSA People Power Revolt. She was 76.

The official announcement was made by Cory’s only son, Sen. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino Jr. who said his mother died of cardiorespiratory arrest at the Makati Medical Center in the early hours of Aug. 1 (exactly 3:18 a.m.) She had been suffering from colon cancer for six months.

“She would have wanted us to thank each and everyone of you for all your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country,” he said.

Tita Cory, who was married to the martyred former Sen. Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino, is survived by their five children Maria Elena A. Cruz, Aurora Corazon A. Abellada, Noynoy, Victoria Eliza A. Dee, and actress-television host Kris (Kristina Bernadette) Aquino, married to basketball player James Yap.
