  1. Hot! Noynoy Aquino’s Hindi ka Nag-iisa video

    October 30, 2009 by ajay

Hot off the press: the Noynoy Aquino video first shown on ABS-CBN tonight. Have you watched it yet? :D

Honestly, I got goosebumps when I saw this. My American husband says the one thing with Noynoy is that he’s catching the imagination of the apathetic Filipino people and that’s a good thing.

Most notable is the fact that Noynoy is spending the least among the presidentiables. The star-studded Hindi Ka Nag-iisa video itself is described as a “love offering from entertainment and advertising industry professionals.”

Regine Velasquez is shown singing the Noynoy anthem, which makes you think why Sharon Cuneta and Ogie Alcasid aren’t lending their voice when they’re also in it. Also seen in the video: Kris Aquino (of course), Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Anne Curtis, Mariel Rodriguez, Ai-ai de las Alas, Boy Abunda and some others.

  2. Flash update: Cebu Pacific, PAL flight cancellations due to Typhoon Santi

    October 30, 2009 by ajay

As of now, I just hope this typhoon isn’t as bad as what the weathermen are predicting. Typhoon Santi, change course, if you may. Or break it to us gently.

Classes were suspended this morning in Metro Manila. No wonder, my son waited for his school bus but it didn’t come.

The passage of commercial boats around Southern Luzon have also been suspended, spoiling the vacation plans of people who wanted to go home to provinces like Quezon, Batangas and Bicol for the long All Saints’ Day holiday, a time when Filipinos honor their dead.

And so far, the following Cebu Pacific flights for tomorrow (October 31, 2009) have been cancelled:

    5J 851/852 (Zamboanga), 559/561/554 (Cebu), 781/782 (Ozamiz), 325/326 (Legazpi) 5J 379/ 380/ 381/ 382 (Cagayan de Oro), 961 (Davao), 651/652 (Tacloban), 993/994 (GenSan), 473/474 (Bacolod), 451/452 (Iloilo), 5J 521/522 (Naga), 331/332 (Kalibo), 821/822 (Virac), 108/109 (Hong Kong) and 801/802 (Singapore).

  3. Pritchon at La Mesa Grill

    October 30, 2009 by ajay

I consider pritchon or piniritong lechon one of the savviest Pinoy food inventions ever. Sure it takes off from wrapped roasted Peking duck, but I bet the taste of roast suckling pig with its tender fat melting into the mouth is more heavenly.

There was a time when pritchon was all the rage in Manila parties. Gourmet chefs invented all kinds of tasty sauces to go with the dish and eating pritchon can be one of the most interactive foodie experiences around. The craze has somewhat died down but am glad there are still select places you can go to when the pritchon craving hits. Like La Mesa Grill in Mall of Asia which considers it a specialty on their menu.

    pritchon

    pritchon

Photo shows the half order of pritchon (P1,999) that was served on our table. The whole family was gathered because a visiting aunt from Chicago was leaving the next day, and we were giving her a despedida dinner. Service was highly personalized as our waiter personally attended to slicing the crisp lechon, topping it with sliced onions, cucumber and celery leaves (?) and folding them over the pandan crepe. The pritchon even becomes more savory when paired with the selection of sauces, and my favorite were the hoisin and lechon sauces.

  4. MoMo at Robinsons Manila: no longer momolicious?

    October 27, 2009 by ajay

    MoMo

I was all raving about MoMo! Food + Drink when they opened. With free wifi, cool waitstaff and mouthwatering desserts as low as P50, it was destined to be the great hangout on Robinsons new Midtown Wing.Until they closed for renovations and revamped their menu. Unfortunately, things look headed for the worst.

Brewed coffee is now at P150 from the previous P75. At this rate, am better hanging out in the Shang-ri La. :D

    Momo

My friend ordered their peach torte for P195, and it was nothing outstanding. The premium dessert, L’Opera at the nearby Manila Diamond Hotel is better and cheaper because it’s only P165.

The only good thing was that MoMo! serves these breadsticks with a serving of herbed butter, before your main course arrives.

  5. You know you’re a Facebook addict if ….

    October 26, 2009 by ajay

    1. Your everyday conversations with friends are peppered with references to Facebook, as in: ” wow! Couple X broke up already? I saw it in her status update.”

    2. Facebook is blocked in your office so you bring your own laptop with your own broadband connection.

    3. You use Facebook Mobile. You surf Facebook even on your phone and when you feel the urge to, which is OFTEN.

    4. You derive immense pleasure in showing off your old photos to everyone on your friends’ list, even if your ancestors will rise from the grave it takes 12 hours for you to scan them.

    5. You think about your farm or your restaurant even when you’re at work or in a business meeting. You’re more worried that your plants will wilt and your food will be spoiled.

    6. Even your friends are amazed at your level of prowess in Facebook games. You’re the Poker King, master farmer in Farmtown and gourmet queen in Restaurant City.

  6. Online shoppers flock to Shop and Share

    October 22, 2009 by ajay

    Shop&Share

My friend Maricel was the one who tipped me on this nifty new site called ShopandShare where celebrities like Kris Aquino are putting up their precious designer items on auction to help victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

I’ve been eyeing Kris’ LV Stephen Prouse bag myself, but the current bid now is at $3,600 (from a starting bid of only $799).The highest bid now is for Angel Locsin’s Prada Nappa Tote ($4,150, as of this writing.)

Either the ones bidding are avid Ebay shopaholics or simply Good Samaritans. But it’s nice to know that some people won’t hesitate to join an auction for a good cause. Even nicer still that the showbiz personalities we admire are selfless enough to use their face value and pulling power to donate to typhoon victims.

  7. Ascott Makati and its Cafe on the 6th

    October 20, 2009 by ajay

Ascott Makati (formerly Oakwood Premier) is an oasis in the urban jungle that is the Makati CBD (Central Business District). What makes it ideal is that it is just beside the Glorietta 4 mall. Since not all of us are expats and executives who can afford the expensive long stays at the Ascott, I was pleased to find out that their coffeeshop called Cafe on the 6th is perfect for cozy meetings and leisurely lunches with friends. The prices aren’t bad either. It should be a good alternative for when you’ve had your fill of all the mall restos or tired of the often-crowded mall ambiance.

We got to try the Ascott’s specialties because fellow blogger Spanky Enriquez knows the hotel’s lifestyle manager Ms. Susan Salcedo and after a series of emails later, we were finally able to gather together for a dinner there.

The evening started with a series of nibblers. They were good, but it seems we were too busy catching up on the gossip, political news and post-storm Ondoy chit-chat to notice much.Appetizers like peanuts, potato chips and vegetable sticks are served for free for diners of the cafe.

    nibbles

The big plate of chicken and seafood frites (P615) is for sharing. The serving consists of chicken fingers, fish fillet, squid, mussels and onion rings. For dips, you can choose between homemade aioli, barbecue and ponzu sauce.

    Ascott Makati

I really liked their Artisanal Cheese Board (P470) consisting of three kinds of cheeses – local farm-produced chevre, pecorino and blue peppato, with dried fruits and nuts, organic honey, biscuits and crusty bread. Good enough filler for light eaters and the health conscious.

  8. October 2009 CPA board exam results: 2,888 out of 6,929 pass

    October 19, 2009 by ajay

The results of the October 2009 board exams given by the Board of Accountancy is out and am glad that the daughter of a friend who studied in one of Manila’s leading universities was one of those who passed. Passing rate was 41.68% which means there were still more who failed than passed this tough exam :(

Congratulations to the country’s new batch of accountants! Without a doubt, this remains one of the exacting and demanding professions there is and they deserve to be taken care of. Businesses wouldn’t be running soundly and anomalies wouldn’t be uncovered without them, right? Accountants also remain very much in-demand in the Philippines and abroad… especially the latter where the most talented number crunchers have relocated.

Judging from the top passers of the latest board exam results, it seems being called a top accountant isn’t any more the monopoly of top universities in Manila like UP, De La Salle-Manila, UE and UST. This year’s CPA board exam topnotchers come from reputable universities in the provinces.

  9. The real Facebook home

    October 16, 2009 by ajay

It goes with the success. The queen of social networks, Facebook, has just moved to their new headquarters in Palo Alto, California and we can’t help but salivate. Dig the bike and the Eames chairs (via Dezeen.com)

    Facebook-Headquarters

The design, done by San Francisco-based Studio O+A, is cool, hip, and reminds almost everyone of the equally freewheeling atmosphere at Google. The walls have in fact been laid bare so the 700 or so employees housed in the building can freely post artworks and even write graffiti on them.

  10. Yes, it is all right to go bananas and OD on this miracle fruit

    October 15, 2009 by ajay

How true is it that they’re running out of bananas in Japan?

That’s because the figure-conscious Japanese are into this Morning Banana Diet which goes like this: eat a banana with water for breakfast, eat anything you like for lunch, take a snack but no desserts in between meals, have dinner by 8 p.m. and make sure to go to bed before midnight. It is so good that one actress has reportedly lost 26 pounds with it (via Huffington Post).

I do attest that bananas are a good filler. Because am usually rushing to go the office, it just takes a visit to the nearest 7-11 store to assuage my hunger pangs for when am caught between breakfast and lunch. 7-11 sells these perfect and lovely DOLE bananas for just P12.00. What could be a better, cheaper food slash diet alternative?
