  1. Bar exam results 2010: 24.58 % of examinees pass, San Beda grad is topnotcher

    March 26, 2010 by ajay

Out of the 5,903 law graduates who took the 2009 bar exams in the Philippines, only 1,451 passed while 4,452 didn’t, for a total passing rate of 24.58 per cent.

The latest passing rate may already be considered low since the bar exams is considered one of the toughest in the land, but it’s still higher compared to the passing rate in the 2008 bar exams which was only 20.58 per cent.

There has been a delay in the announcement of the full list of successful examinees. While the Supreme Court said it will post the bar exam results at 6 p.m. today, March 26, the announcement was moved to 7 p.m., then 8 pm and 8:30. It still wasn’t available at 10 p.m. tonight.

A San Beda law grad, Reinier Paul Yebra, is this year’s topnotcher with a score of 84.88, followed by another Bedan, Charlene Mae Tapic (84.60) on the second place. Rounding out the Top 10 examinees are the following new lawyers from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and the University of the Philippines.

First of all, thank you to all who joined our recent Share your horrific hair removal story promo sponsored by Veet. 3. Velocity Bar @ the Marriott Hotel Manila: five-star lounging

    March 23, 2010 by ajay

Now I know: this was the best place in town to watch the recent Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey boxing match. If only that one didn’t turn out to be one heck of a peek-a-boo fight, courtesy of Clottey :D

The city’s newest five-star hotel, Marriott Hotel Manila, presents Velocity Bar – a topnotch sports and entertainment bar that will be the hang-out of expats and dyed-in-the-wool yuppies in due time. A hole-in-the-wall this is not, as this place has lots of couches, lounge chairs and private rooms to accommodate as much as 200 people at a given time. In two simple words: huge. And posh!

What to expect here: large LCD screens scattered in strategic areas, state-of-the-art sound system, and we even spotted a Nintendo Wii console just in case you want to engage in your own fun games.I figure that the bar is ideal for true-blue sports and gaming aficionados or those looking for a new hang-out to chill in.

Local beers are priced at P175 while imported ones (like Stella Artois, Budweiser, Grolsch etc.) cost P225. However, a great bargain can be had during their Happy Hour from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily when selected drinks like San Miguel are offered at a 50 per cent discount.

  4. Ipanema Gisele Bundchen Summer 2010 collection

    March 21, 2010 by ajay

    Ipanema Summer 2010

I remember it was at this same time last year when I fell in love with Ipanema flip-flops, a brand endorsed by no less than curvy Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen. The old pair from a year ago am still wearing up to now, though am gearing to replace it with hippier designs from the 2010 “Colorful Sea” collection.

The 2010 collection is all about freedom, sophistication and grace. They are flip-flops that can easily be worn on the streets, in the beach and in laughter-filled summer parties. Comfort wearers can choose from platform wedges to feminine thong designs with attractive colors, stylish straps and nice tropical touches.

  5. ’tis the season for new netbooks from Samsung, ASUS

    March 19, 2010 by ajay

Am a newbie to netbooks. But when my beloved Mac underwent major repairs recently (all free courtesy of the AppleCare warranty), I had to get a standby, supplementary laptop. My choice is the pretty & dainty HP Mini by Studio Tord Boontje. Never mind if it’s not the newest model in the market. I like its all-white, feminine form, the tactile keyboard, Windows 7 Starter pack and amazing six-cell battery life. It’s a reliable baby, and I’ve learned the meaning of carrying your lappy for mobility’s sake. It’s so light at 1.06 kilos :D

However, I’ve also attended a few events recently introducing new netbooks which leads me to believe that it must be hard for consumers to make a choice these days. For example, if I didn’t have my Mini, I’d surely choose the new Samsung N220 and N150 line of netbooks for two reasons: 1) the brand is reliable and 2) the prices, ranging from 22 to 25K (in pesos) is reasonable, considering its features.

    Samsung N220

Both models promise from 8-12 hours battery life, anti-reflective screen, scratch-free casing and the latest Intel Atom N450 processor. Add-ons like the YouCam puts special effects to your video chats and recorded videos. Of course, wi-fi is a given ;)

  6. Worst service ever : Tempura Japanese Grill

    March 17, 2010 by ajay

    Tempura shithole

I’ve eaten twice in this resto before, and I don’t know what happened along the way. It’s rare that i RANT, but when I do, my Kamote Award for Worst Service and Sanitation by a restaurant chain goes to ….. Tempura Japanese Grill.

How else do you explain being an office worker on a one-hour lunch break, and 35 minutes later, your order still hasn’t arrived? We ate at their United Nations Avenue branch, and I had to beg for a glass of water just to quench my thirst while waiting. In the meantime, I had to use their toilet which was strewn with used tissue toilet paper (!!!) by the entrance door. And upon entering, there was a small container for used tissues which was sitting on top of the toilet bowl where the water receptacle for flushing was. EWWEEE!

The waiter told me it takes 15 minutes for food orders to be delivered, and I reminded him that it was definitely past that already. After 35 minutes, he comes marching in with a plate of gyoza that was submerged in oil. I told him it certainly looks “very oily” and we were leaving, never mind the fact that there was no sign of our other orders arriving.

The (mis)manager, a certain Kim, told moi, there was a “computer error” in the processing of food orders, hence the delay. Computer error kaya, o hindi lang kayo marunong gumamit ng computer? Ano naman ang koneksyon ng kompyuter kung ilang hakbang lang ang layo ng kusina? (what does it matter if the kitchen is just a couple of steps away?)

The husband can only grumble in silence: “Exactly, how does that explain their service? I’m fairly sure my waiter was human, not some hybrid, like Schwarzenegger in ‘Terminator.’ It wasn’t like Rosie from the Jetsons was moonlighting there. Sheesh.”

I told an officemate about my predicament, and she agreed. It took them 30 minutes to give her the final bill the last time she dined there, and it wasn’t even a busy hour.

  8. Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey: tale of the tape

    March 12, 2010 by ajay

    Pacquiao vs. Clottey

Pacquiao vs. Clottey in Texas, via boxingscene.com

It is going to be a tough fight for Manny Pacquiao on March 13 at Texas’ Cowboys Stadium. Clottey’s cook has boasted that the Philippines’ greatest fighter will most likely end up in the hospital. But that’s his word. Pacman is still heavily favored to win over Clottey, even though boxers from Ghana have a rep of being bloody brawlers. Clottey’s edge is that he is taller, heavier and has more reach than our pound-for-pound king (see tale of the tape below). He’s expected to stun with his powerful upper cuts and head butts. But Team Pacman promises to run the Ghanian to the ground with his skill and speed. We think it’s going to be an exciting match and we’re definitely watching ;)

    Manny Pacquiao

    Age : 31
    Weight : 146 lbs.
    Height: 5 ft. 6.5 in. (1.69m)
    Reach: 67″

  9. Cafe Juanita at the Fort

    March 10, 2010 by ajay

Hubby and I dined for the first time in Cafe Juanita at the Fort a few days ago, after visiting my doctor in St. Luke’s Global City. It has been my wish to dine in this resto because the original location in Pasig was simply inaccessible for me. Am glad they opened in the bustling foodie strip called Burgos Circle in Forbestown Center since last year. (Prior to our visit, the only eatery we’ve tried in Burgos Circle was the Kebab Factory which unfortunately couldn’t compare with the authentic Middle Eastern restaurants in Ermita :D )

The first thing that catches the eye about the cafe is its shabby chic interiors. The decor’s sure to make good conversational pieces. The soft lighting casts a romantic glow which makes the resto a great date place.

    Cafe Juanita

But am not about to join those who’ve made rave reviews about the place. In fact, I think it’s a bit overrated, food-wise. I would happily go back there again to try the other dishes though, and for a slice of their heavenly sticky toffee pudding served with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream and lip-smackin’ caramel sauce. It was simply delish!

  10. Catch and shoot Barbara, win a Macbook Pro promo by Veet

    March 7, 2010 by ajay

Last Thursday, I wrote about this mystery woman we saw in Greenhills which jibed with what I read in two of the leading blogs, byahilo and chuvaness.com. As I had suspected, she’s a real character and her true name is Barbara Cruz.

According to Barbara’s close friend, “she’s real, all right. We’ve known her for some time, but she’s always looked that way no matter how hard we’ve tried to convince her to go with the modern times. She is afraid of change, and insists on clinging to tradition. Her appearance reflects her old-fashioned habits.”

A few weeks after the Barbara sightings, it seems she’s caught the interest of leading depilatory brand Veet which has launched a promo aptly titled Catch and Shoot Barbara. A gadget freak like me would like to join this contest, if only because the top prize at stake is a Macbook Pro, an iPhone 3GS and other exciting prizes. :D
