Just in case you missed it on CNN.... I am in utter disbelief myself seeing on the news dead bodies lying around and survivors still not having access to food FIVE days after super typhoon Haiyan hit. Here's one lucid observation about how the disaster response has been managed (or mismanaged). In the words of Assistant Secretary Lila Shahani of the National Anti-Poverty Commission: "Given the scale of the devastation, it is natural that we ask some hard questions. Was the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (chaired by Senator ... Continue Reading...
Visa requirement to HK? think again
The Hong Kong Legislative Council passed a resolution last week seeking to impose sanctions on the Philippines for its failure to apologize and compensate victims of the 2010 Manila bus hostage crisis. And one of the threats being dangled was the revocation of Filipinos' visa-free access to HK. The timing couldn't be better as the warnings were made just as super typhoon Yolanda beat down on the Visayas with full force. It left a rather bad taste in the mouth. For most of us in Manila, the common reaction was: "who the hell cares? We will go to Bangkok, or ... Continue Reading...
How to donate to victims of typhoon #YolandaPH (updated)
I pray that my relatives & friends in the Leyte/Southern Leyte/ Cebu areas hardest hit by super typhoon Yolanda are safe and well. Also, the rest of our countrymen who were in the path of this killer storm... I hope you are fine wherever you are. As a public service, we've compiled a list of reliable organizations from where you can send money, relief good or call to organize ... Continue Reading...
#missuniverse2013 fails to answer the question…and wins!
Congratulations are in order for the Philippines' very own Ariella Arida for winning 3rd runner-up in the Miss Universe 2013 pageant. It's quite a feat to be the only Asian in the Top 5, and fourth year in a row that we've done it. Ariella placed first in the swimsuit competition but unfortunately it seems her tacky evening gown did her in. Ara did her best to carry it, but the color and the material was far from queenly. We would have thought it came straight out of the bargain racks of Divisoria. (Photo courtesy of ... Continue Reading...
Miss Universe 2013: PHL in beauty grand slam?
And the answer is: we can hope! :) After the coronation of Mutya Johanna Datul as Miss Supranational 2013 in Belarus, Megan Young as Miss World 2013 in Bali, the pressure is high on the chemist-beauty queen from the province of Laguna, Ariella Arida to bag the Miss Universe crown, something which has eluded the Philippines since 1973. Reports state that Ariella is a top favorite in a field of 86 equally beautiful candidates from all over the world, and we wish her luck! The live telecast of Miss Universe 2013 from Crocus City Hall in Moscow happens in a few ... Continue Reading...
