Some of you might be bored but am writing this to help me remember the highlights of my 2011 ;) 2011 was definitely the year of the groupons! The Philippines' dynamic group buying sites like Deal Grocer, awesome.ph, Ensogo and Cashcashpinoy definitely filled up my inbox and I had to restrain myself from clicking on every tempting deal :) This is because some of them expired on me, either because I got very busy or they were too far from where am based. As a groupon user, I aim to give consumers some groupon buying tips in 2012. We really have to be discerning and ... Continue Reading...
Hello 2012 & remembering 2011…..
Where I sit, it's less than two hours before we ring in 2012 ... a year referred to with doom by some. Hope not! We remain optimistic and abide by the reference to our Catholic prayer about a "world without end." After the tsunami that hit Japan in March and the damages caused by typhoons Pedring and Sendong in the Philippines, we can only pray that there'd be no more calamities of such magnitude that will visit us in the coming year. As we say hello to 2012, am ready to offer a thanksgiving because 2011 was, overall, a good year. There were hurdles but I'd like to ... Continue Reading...
Cioccolata Churros Cafe @ The Bayleaf Hotel Intramuros
I used to work for the newspaper (I still write in!) from 1996 to 2001 and I still remember the one-storey McDonald's a few meters away that used to be in this spot. Now it's being occupied by The Bayleaf, the newest boutique hotel to rise in Manila's historic district of Intramuros. I can't help but wax sentimental, especially since so many places are being torn down in Manila to give way to high-rise condos and the like. But at least, they did a good job with The Bayleaf. Aside from the old McDonald's, this area used to have only roadside stalls servicing the ... Continue Reading...
How to cook lechon in an oven: recipe from Mama Sita
I already narrated before our Divisoria press trip with the people from Mama Sita. The culmination of our tour was our lunch at the cozy Ristorante Delle Mitre in front of the historic San Agustin Church. I was surprised that this resto is being ran by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. Anyway, we were served food using Mama Sita ingredients and I wouldn't object since we also use this brand at home. What caught my attention was the oven-roasted pork belly (lechon) resplendent in its brown skin. I guess lechon is one food we leave to the experts and ... Continue Reading...
Merry Christmas / Maligayang Pasko :)
So how was your Christmas? It is close to midnight and about to end here in the Philippines though the Christmas tree will be up until January. I love the season (but not the traffic!) mostly because I get a high from seeing all the gaily-decorated lights in buildings and people's houses. Mr. Z took care of the noche buena last night, mostly because I was too tired from working the graveyard shift the night before. We kept it simple on the table: steamed veggies, shepherd's pie and this yummy pineapple upside down cornmeal cake ... ... Continue Reading...
