Manila Chinatown: Sights, sounds, taste & smell

July 3, 2006 ·

Chinatown shots I like Manila's Chinatown because there's an "otherworld-ly" quality to it. I've never been to mainland China (although have been to Chinatowns in other parts of the world) and the one near my home in the center of Manila is the closest I can get to exploring this culture, considered one of the oldest in the world. Manila's Chinatown is a mish-mash of sights, sounds and flavors. It's a pain in the neck driving through its alleys so the more wise would be better off walking. This will give you more time to check through the stores, mostly ... Continue Reading...

Manila Chinatown’s best mami & siopao at Masuki, the original ‘Ma Mon Luk’

July 2, 2006 ·

If you're wondering whatever happened to the famous Ma Mon Luk, it would be interesting to know that there's still one existing in Banawe, Quezon City. And of course the original one is still alive and kicking, it's just known by another name 'Masuki." How Ma Mon Luk came to be Masuki is a rather long story (labor problems among them) but old-timers in the city can attest that Masuki's same spot on 931 Benavidez St., Binondo, Manila was exactly where Chinatown's first mami house was established, in 1930. For history's sake, Ma Mon Luk (bless his soul) was a ... Continue Reading...

Panciteria Lido: Chinatown’s best coffee and ‘pugon-roasted’ asado

June 30, 2006 ·

Lido Asado Originally uploaded by ajay1. I begin this series on Manila's Chinatown by giving the spotlight on Panciteria Lido which is considered a culinary landmark in the area, having been established in 1936. Located on T. Alonzo St., Sta. Cruz, Manila, it has the buzz of the traditional Chinese teahouse, complete with Chinese reading Chinese language newspapers. Weekends are usually packed and Lido hosts VIPs like Sen. Alfredo Lim who goes here without fail on Sundays. ... Continue Reading...

Trying out the LRT2

June 30, 2006 ·

LRT2-Pilipinas In these days of high gas prices, using your car the whole time doesn't seem practical, especially if you're a Manilan going to the shopping/business districts of Ortigas and Makati. Believe moi, the traffic and finding some parking in these places on normal days is so crazy and will drain a hole in your pocket besides. Ever since ditching my car, I've found out it a breeze to use the train to go from one point of Manila to the next. On those days when I've done so (emphasis on 'those days' because my workplace is just walking distance from ... Continue Reading...

2006 World Cup fever heats up even more: meet the hunks of football

June 27, 2006 ·

kaka Originally uploaded by scorpioneyes. The World Cup fever is on in Manila! Okay, the crowds are mostly male but at least this basketball-crazy country is taking notice of another sport for a change.A lot of bars and lounges, including one in the hotel I work in, have put up giant TVs and projection screens to show the matches now happening in Germany. And the atmosphere is going to heat up even more on the way to the finals. Which team do you think will win? Some say current champion Brazil - with its power-packed line-up - has a strong chance of ... Continue Reading...
